Zens’ new Apple MagSafe multicharger powers up to four devices

Image
A four-in-one charging behemoth. | Image: Zens Zens is releasing a new set of charging stands today, offering a mix of wireless and wired charging for up to four devices. At the top of the list is the Zens 4-in-1 Modular Wireless Charger , which has an official MagSafe stand for charging iPhones at 15W wireless speeds, a Qi pad for charging compatible AirPods, a stand for wired USB-C charging of an iPad or MacBook Air, and an Apple Watch charger that can fast charge a Series 7, Series 8, or Ultra. That last bit is what really gives this $179.95 Franken-charger its “modular” moniker, since the Apple Watch charger attaches magnetically. You can get the same setup as a three-in-one , sans Apple Watch charger, for $149.95 — though if you change your mind later, the standalone module costs... Netflix CEO says he’ll order Dave Chappelle specials ‘again and again’ despite employee backlash

Image
Laura Normand / The Verge Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company would order Dave Chappelle’s comedy specials “again and again” at The New York Times ’ DealBook Summit on Wednesday. Chappelle’s last comedy special, The Closer , came under fire by employees for being transphobic. “We’re just trying to be the most exciting entertainment company and more,” Hastings said when asked about how Netflix deals with controversy. “That special was one of the most entertaining watch specials we’ve ever had. We would do it again and again.” Hastings then goes on to describe Chappelle as “very entertaining and provocative,” aligning with Netflix’s overall goal of being “about entertainment.” Netflix bought The Closer for $24.1 million , and it premiered on the platform last... Here’s everything that went wrong with FTX

Image
The Verge FTX’s sudden and catastrophic collapse sent reverberations throughout the entire cryptocurrency industry. What was once the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange is now in a death spiral that has billions of dollars left in limbo. If you’re wondering how FTX managed to get to this point, you’re in the right place. Here’s a play-by-play of everything that went wrong. First of all, what exactly is FTX? FTX is a cryptocurrency exchange based in the Bahamas. It was founded by Sam Bankman-Fried in 2019 and lets users buy, sell, hold, and trade cryptocurrency (although those functions aren’t available right now due to the firm’s collapse). In its prime, FTX spent its money on a number of sponsorship deals. While the Miami Heat’s stadium... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/tWKUEMC

Apple’s latest iOS 16 update includes optimizations for car crash detection

Image
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max both have Apple’s Crash Detection feature. | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Apple has just released iOS 16.1.2, and the company is calling out two key updates in its patch notes: “improved compatibility with wireless carriers” and “Crash Detection optimizations on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.” The Crash Detection enhancements could be particularly notable, as there have been some issues with inadvertent activations since the feature launched. Crash Detection is designed to activate Emergency SOS and alert emergency services if it thinks you’ve been in a car crash, but the feature has also triggered for people safely riding rollercoasters, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal . Based on the vague iOS 16.1.2 patch notes, it’s unclear if the update addresses these sorts of mistaken alerts, but... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/5e3JLd8

Kraken crypto exchange lays off 30 percent of workforce

Image
Kristen Radtke / The Verge; Getty Images The cryptocurrency exchange Kraken announced job cuts today, affecting 30 percent of its workforce, or around 1,100 employees. In a blog post , Kraken CEO Jesse Powell says the firm made the decision to help it weather the “crypto winter.” Kraken, a platform that lets users buy, sell, and trade crypto, announced its plans to hire 500 new employees in June , but only as long as their beliefs aligned with the company’s “crypto-first culture,” which apparently means not calling out things said by others as “toxic, hateful, racist, x-phobic.” But now, Kraken’s pulling back on its spending after a period of rapid growth, citing “significantly lower trading volumes and fewer client sign-ups.” Powell says that while Kraken tried to mitigate... Elon Musk is delaying Twitter’s paid verification to avoid Apple’s 30 percent cut

Image
You might have to buy Blue somewhere else. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter’s revamped Blue subscription might not be available as an in-app purchase on iOS when it eventually relaunches so that it can dodge Apple’s 30 percent cut of App Store purchases, according to Platformer . When the new Blue was briefly available earlier this month, you could only purchase it through Twitter’s iOS app. But while Elon Musk is publicly tweeting his displeasure with Apple, it appears he wants to avoid having to pay Apple’s fees. Musk had said that the new Blue, which allows people to purchase a blue verification check mark, was set to relaunch on Tuesday after signups were paused following a wave of impersonators . But that launch has been delayed, Platformer says, and The Verge has also heard of the delay from a... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/yqluHIp

Good luck getting a new iPhone 14 Pro before the holidays

Image
iPhone 14 Pros are a scarce sight these days. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge Apple is on track to ship 20 percent fewer iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max units than expected this quarter due to recent covid lockdown restrictions and labor protests at an iPhone production plant owned by Foxconn. The latest report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates a shortfall of 15 to 20 million units, far worse than the 6 million units predicted earlier this week . The 14 Pro and Pro Max were already hard to find, and Kuo predicts that mass shipments won’t resume until late December at the earliest. Workers at the massive Foxconn facility have reportedly been forced to live on-site in an attempt to contain a covid outbreak. Protests ensued, with workers citing withheld pay and poor conditions, spurring Foxconn to offer some newly... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/RpbNsr4

With the new season come a fresh set of skins, a new hero, new map, and a new game mode, all with a Greek mythology flavor that might make you forget about that other god of war . ( Unlikely .) The biggest development coming with season 2 is the release of the sexy sentient robot Ramattra. Over the weekend, Blizzard revealed more about his design, abilities, and play style, creating what Blizzard’s calling a “tempo tank,” reflecting his unique ability to change his form and thereby his abilities to fit the flow of battle. That ‘90s Show’s first trailer is a reminder of time’s relentless march forward

Image
Kurtwood Smith as Red Forman and Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty Forman. | Netflix It’s been 20 years since That ‘80s Show spectacularly failed to recreate That ‘70s Show ’s monster success and wound up being canceled just weeks into its first season. The way That ‘70s Show went out with a lackluster bang a few years later could easily have been the end of the franchise, but Netflix is gearing up to bring the Point Place crew back with the very imaginatively named That ‘90s Show . Similar to That ‘70s Show , That ‘90s Show revolves around a group of young Wisconsinites whose budding friendships are destined to become lifelong relationships as they all grow up and get to know one another. Image

What is Red Planet Day, and what is its significance with Mars

Image
Mars, the fourth planet in our solar system (and a potential candidate for human colonisation sometime in the future) is often referred to as the Red Planet. The planet has hardly any air, coupled with a terrain that’s made of a sandy desert.  There are indications of activities on the planet in the past, with volcanic eruptions, seasons, canyons, polar ice caps, all being a part of the planet’s geography. It is believed that Mars became inhospitable around 4 billion years ago, when its magnetic field died out and the atmosphere eroded. So, what is Red Planet Day? The Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft to arrive on Mars on 28th November, 1964. This day is known as Red Planet Day and marks mankind’s first excursion onto the planet. Red Planet Day is celebrated every year.  The Mariner 4 was built specifically to facilitate space exploration in the future, and its primary purpose was to conduct fly-bys and gather data on the planet. It completed its mission in 8 months, allo...

Samsung may unveil a foldable screen laptop with a virtual keyboard very soon

Image
Samsung has been working on foldable devices for a few years now, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 being largely lauded as a high-functioning device that isn’t compromised by the folding technology. Now, the Korean manufacturer is working on a folding laptop, based on the recent patents filed. The upcoming folding laptop will not be the first of its kind to enter the market. Lenovo has come out with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold with a folding display. Similarly, the recently launched ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED has the largest folding screen available in the market at the moment. The patent for the same was filed all the way back in 2020.  How will the Samsung folding laptop work? As per the patent that has been filed, the Samsung folding laptop will allow users to fold it in half, thereby decreasing its size and the storage space required. This laptop is likely to have an OLED panel (like most folding devices) and may have a high refresh rate.  While other folding laptops do...

Today I learned LG makes a space-saving cubicle monitor

Image
The LG Libero sits flush against partitions. | Image: LG Desk space is pretty limited when you’re working inside a cubicle, but LG’s 27-inch Libero Monitor could help you clear up a little more room. The monitor, which LG released back in August, comes with a two-way stand that lets you either hang it up on the wall of your workspace or have it stand on its own. The Libero’s design is pretty clever. It actually hangs upside down when hooked to the included partition hanger, and then flips right side up when set atop your desk. LG says it automatically adjusts its screen orientation when flipped, and it also comes with a detachable webcam (along with two webcam ports), so you can partake in video calls no matter how it’s mounted. That said, it seems like a useful external monitor or a... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/vf0zQAx

Splinter Cell is getting a… radio adaptation?

The Last of Us is getting a big budget HBO TV show , the Metal Gear Solid movie is still in development, and now Ubisoft’s long-dormant stealth series Splinter Cell is getting an eight part radio adaptation. The BBC has just announced Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Firewall , an adaptation of the Splinter Cell novel of the same name released earlier this year starring Will Poulter. In the context of the many recent big-budget game adaptations for the big and small screen alike, a radio play sounds like an odd choice for what was once one of Ubisoft’s flagship franchises. UK plans to make the sharing of non-consensual deepfake porn illegal

The government announced this morning that deepfakes would be covered in the legislation along with strengthened laws against “downblousing” (taking explicit images down a women’s top without consent). Elon Musk says Twitter will begin manually authenticating Blue, Grey, and Gold accounts as soon as next week

Oh, and making the tick a different color. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Elon Musk says that Twitter’s check mark program could return on Friday, December 2nd, with a new procedure to verify individual identities in order to resolve impersonation issues. Musk described the new manual authentication process as “ painful, but necessary. ” Verified check marks will also be expanded with additional colors — gold for companies, grey for the government, and the original blue for individual accounts. As it turns out, offering so-called verified check marks for an $8 monthly subscription without actually verifying identities wasn’t a brilliant idea. The Samsung Galaxy S23 and Apple iPhone 14 could share this feature

This former debuted its satellite communication technology this year, and we may see the same technology employed in the Samsung Galaxy S23. According to the brand, they’ve been working on satellite communication technology for over 2 years, and have just managed to iron out issues.  ET News recently reported that Samsung has been working with Iridium to develop its satellite communication technology. Iridium is a low-earth orbit constellation that leverages its 66 satellites to deliver voice and data functions. By partnering with the communications brand, Samsung hopes to offer the ability to send text messages and low-res images via satellite connections.  Is this different from the Apple iPhone 14’s satellite technology? Elon Musk just decided to bring the worst people on the internet back to Twitter

Image
Photo by James Wakibia/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Twitter CEO Elon Musk has decided to offer “general amnesty” to suspended accounts starting next week — a gentler way of saying that he’s decided to welcome back some of the site’s worst and most toxic people. It’s the second major moderation decision he’s made since taking over after unbanning former President Donald Trump ; both decisions were made after Musk ran an informal poll from his personal Twitter account. The decision to reverse years of moderation work at Twitter effectively trashes Musk’s original promise: to create a diverse council that would help adjudicate serious moderation decisions. Musk backed away from that idea by later blaming “political/social activist groups” for breaking an alleged “deal” — a claim nobody has... Google Messages has started letting some users react with any emoji

Image
And just like that, Messages are now way more fun. Google has started letting some users of its Messages app react to text messages with any emoji, instead of limiting them to the standard set of seven that have been available in the app for a while now ( via 9to5Google ). The feature’s similar to what other messaging platforms like Slack, WhatsApp , and paid versions of Telegram have — pressing and holding on a message gives you the standard emoji reactions, but you can then access the picker to react with whatever you want. The expanded emoji reactions appear to be a limited test at this point — 9to5Google says it’s heard two reports of it being rolled out, and while one person on The Verge ’s staff has access to it, two other people who checked do not. Google didn’t immediately respond to... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/Rj7fGLZ

The scheme began in 2013 when Potapenko, Turõgin, and the others started a company called HashCoins, according to an indictment, which you can read in full below. Elon Musk tries to blame ‘activists’ for his Twitter moderation council lie

Image
Kristen Radtke / The Verge; Getty IMages Elon Musk is trying to explain why he let Donald Trump and others back onto Twitter, even after he promised that decision would be left up to a content moderation council made up of people with “widely diverse viewpoints.” And wow, his explanation sure is something; in a tweet on Tuesday night , he claimed the council was part of a deal he made with an unnamed “large coalition of political/social activist groups,” implying it was their fault. Musk claims he made a deal to keep those groups from trying to destroy Twitter’s ad revenue, and that those groups “broke the deal,” and so he no longer has to uphold all that stuff about the council. This conversation happened after Musk said that there was “not one permanent ban... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/uhCqS05

Embracer is ripping a beloved mobile game away from people who paid for it

Image
Did you ever buy Deus Ex Go , the excellent mobile puzzler from Square Enix Montreal that still ranks among the top 150 puzzle games on the App Store despite charging actual money to download? Then you’ll probably be frustrated to hear: Embracer Group, the massive conglomerate that’s gobbling up rights to franchises like Deus Ex and Tomb Raider and The Lord of the Rings and more, has decided you can’t play it anymore. Three weeks after shutting down the studio that produced it (which had incidentally just finished going through an expensive rebrand ), Embracer has decided not only to remove their games from mobile app stores, it’s apparently taking the extra step of making them inaccessible even if you’ve already downloaded them — or in... Marvel Snap introduces new cards and a way to get the cards you want

Image
Image: Second Dinner The developers behind Marvel Snap keep giving the people what they want. In a blog post , the developers announced that in the next patch, they’re adding a slew of new cards and a way for players to get the cards they’ve been pining for. Right now, the way you earn cards in Marvel Snap is by making your way up the collection rank ladder. Every so often, you’ll be rewarded with a new card from a specific pool at random. Random is all fun and good as it forces players to get creative in how they construct their decks so everyone isn’t running the same high-powered cards. But it still kinda sucks when you could craft the perfect deck to drive your enemies from you wailing and screaming if only you had that one card. ( Wong , I need Wong!) C... These vibrating LG Display panels turn car dashboards and headrests into speakers

Image
LG Display’s Thin Actuator Sound Solution is just 30 percent of the weight and 10 percent of the thickness of a conventional car speaker. | Image: LG Display LG Display has developed a new “invisible” speaker technology for vehicles that uses a passport-sized vibrating panel to generate sound. It was developed with an unnamed “global audio company” and is expected to be ready for car interiors next year for installation in places like the dashboard and headliner. The south-Korean tech giant’s Thin Actuator Sound Solution is being promoted as a replacement for traditional speaker systems within cars and other vehicles. Unlike current in-car speaker systems that use heavy components like voice coils, cones, and magnets, the Thin Actuator Sound Solution uses LG Display’s film-type exciter technology to generate sound by vibrating off display panels and various materials within the vehicle, which...
