Best PlayStation 4 games of 2018

Image
If you are one that has a PS4 then 2018 has been a great year for you. Not only have we seen the release of console exclusives, but also a lot of third-party games ensuring you have a large library of games to chose from and different genres to enjoy. There are way too many games that we enjoyed so this list is going to be 10 games you absolutely must play if you own a PS4 or a PS4 Pro. Just to clarify, this list is in no particular order. God Of War Calling this PS4 exclusive one of the most anticipated games of the year would be an understatement. Even since its reveal in 2016, fans were divided if this soft reboot was the right direction for Kratos. We are happy to tell you that yes, it is. God of War brings with it the perfect blend of story telling, gorgeous visuals and breath-taking action. Needless to say that the no cut camera in the game is a technical achievement. Marvel’s Spider-Man Yet another PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man is yet another game that breaks the curse of b

Google may shutdown Hangouts for consumers in 2020: Reports

Image
It looks like Google may be planning to shut down Hangouts in 2020, at least for consumers. This comes via a report by 9to5Google, which cites a source familiar with the product's internal roadmap. To recall, Hangouts was introduced back in 2014 of the year's Google I/O event and took over from the company's previous messaging services like Talk and Messenger. In 2015, Google introduced a standalone website for the service. This negated the need for any plugin to be installed. Earlier this year, Google announced that it was bringing it's Smart Reply feature to Hangouts. The feature analyses the context of a conversation to generate automatic replies. During the announcement. The company said that the Smart Reply feature powers more than 10 percent of email replies. This news comes. Just a couple of months after the company's announced that it was shutting down Google+ for consumers following security concerns. In its review of the third-party developer access to Go

Sony patent hints at smartphone with a transparent display

Image
Foldable smartphones seem to be the next big thing in smartphone technology, with Samsung already confirming its plans to launch a phone next year. It looks like Sony plans to launch a similar smartphone as well, but how it plans to do so is a little different, to say the least. The company has filed a patent which describes a method for a transparent display on a smartphone.  First spotted by LetsGoDigital, the patent shows a smartphone with two displays. One on the front, and one on the back. These can be set to work in six different modes by being set to opaque, transparent, or translucent. The website has also posted a few renders of what the smartphone might look like. This is certainly a very unique take on how to use a dual-display phone. Hopefully, the new technology will help the company regain its foothold in the market. It should also be noted that just because Sony has a patent on the device, it does not guarantee that the company will implement it in a future device.  201

Apple finally allows TRAIs DND App into iOS App Store

Image
TRAI’s DND App has finally and quietly appeared on the iOS App Store. The application which allows users to report and block unwanted spam calls and SMS was banned from Apple’s App Store for the longest time due to potential risk to user privacy. The Cupertino-based company previously held the stance that the app’s behavior of asking users to grant permissions to view call logs and text messages is a violation of user’s privacy, data and security. Soon after, the regulatory authority directed all the telecom networks in India to de-register iPhones as a penalty for not making the DND app available on iPhones. While TRAI’s coercion was opposed by the likes of the Indian Cellular Association (ICA), the regulator set a deadline of six months from July, 2018 for all device providers to get the app onboard their respective app stores or face derecognition from telecom networks. The deadline was set for January 2019. While Google made the app available on Android in 2016, Apple has only now

Valve’s new Steam revenue agreement gives more money to game developers

Image
Steam parent company Valve announced a new revenue split for its online video game marketplace late Friday evening, with the change in its distribution agreement giving developers more money as the number of unit sales increases. Normally, Valve takes around 30 percent of all game sales on Steam, with some exceptions for games for smaller developers in its Steam Direct program. That will remain the case for the first $10 million in sales a game maker or publisher earns. For all sales between $10 million and $50 million, the split goes to 25 percent. And for every sale after the initial $50 million, Steam will take just a 20 percent cut. “The value of a large network like Steam has many benefits that are contributed to and shared by all... Google may shut down Hangouts for consumers in 2020

Image
The days of Google Hangouts for consumers may be coming to an end in 2020, according to a report from 9to5Google today. Hangouts has been suffering from an identity crisis since Google launched it as a replacement for Gchat in 2013 , and it’s actually been losing features in recent years as the company stopped updating the app and took away SMS messaging . That change was part of Google’s new focus for Hangouts, which will stay safe for now as a workplace communication tool in the form of G Suite’s Hangouts Chat, as well as video conferencing platform Hangouts Meet. Google hinted at “giving up on having its own consumer messaging app” back in April, when it announced a new RCS Chat feature within Android Messages . Chat hasn’t officially... Ariana Grande’s ‘thank u, next’ music video had over 765,000 people watching live

Image
Music videos haven’t felt like a communal event since the heydays of MTV and TRL Live , but with the advent of live-streaming, the shared experience may be making a comeback. Today, Ariana Grande debuted the video for her relationship-themed single, “ thank u, next, ” and a lot of people got together on YouTube to watch it at the same time. With services like Twitch, this phenomenon has become fairly standard when it comes to video games, commentary, and certain types of announcements, but Grande’s video may be the first time the live streaming format has been used for a high-profile music video. The hype was helped by Grande’s teases on social media, which hinted that the video would be a homage to Mean Girls , a movie that has become a... Death of a provocateur

Image
By now, anybody who lives a social media life has probably heard that Laura Loomer — the 25-year-old far-right provocateur and self-styled Patreon-supported “investigative journalist” — handcuffed herself to Twitter’s headquarters in New York City on Thursday evening, and, in her words, “threw away the key.” She was protesting Twitter, she said, because she believed the permanent ban she earned from the service for hate speech was unfair. She wanted her account reinstated. She was also there to take action over what she sees as the company’s discrimination against conservatives. (“The account holder was suspended for violating our policies. We apply the Twitter Rules impartially and not based on ideology,” a Twitter spokesperson told The... Salad Fingers is coming back, and I already want to barf

Image
Those of us who grew up online each have our internet albatross. For some, it’s goatse . For others, it’s those viral pre-YouTube jumpscare videos with a screaming face that flashes across the screen for a split second. Mine, regretfully, was Salad Fingers, the animated web series created by David Firth in 2004, about a disgusting, childlike, inexplicably vibrating zombie creature with piquerism and a penchant for rusty spoons. Thus with even more regret I must relay the news that the heinous abomination of my nightmares is getting a new episode sometime in December. Per The Daily Dot , Firth apparently confirmed back in 2017 that he would be resurrecting his green hellspawn. “Without giving too much away, I will say that Salad Fingers is... Bethesda permanently bans Fallout 76 players after homophobic in-game assault

Image
Fallout is a franchise defined by its lawlessness: in the wasteland, nothing can stop denizens from succumbing to their worst tendencies. Fallout 76 leans into the chaos by allowing fans to interact with one another, but recently, one group of fans took things too far. Fallout 76 supports up to 24 players per server, and these participants can talk, trade, and group-up with one another. While the game does allow player-versus-player combat, the feature is opt-in. However, there’s nothing stopping players from following you around and bothering you even if you don’t actually want to engage with them, especially given that Fallout 76 tells you where everyone is at any given time. You can, however, turn off voice-chat for your team. As... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2PdFNUW

Online teen magazine Rookie Mag shuts down after seven years

Image
After seven years of sharing essays, art, advice, and writing for (and often by) teenagers, the online magazine Rookie Mag is shutting down. Launched by fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson in 2011 — when she was only 15 years old — Rookie attracted a million views in six days and went on to become an intimate, authentic, and feminist lens for its primarily young female audience to look at and speak to the world. In a six-page editor’s letter that will be the last post on the site, Gevinson explains that “ Rookie in its current form is no longer financially sustainable.” Although she considered alternatives — including selling the site to a larger media company, bringing on investors, or charging readers for subscriptions — she ultimately... Black Tesla factory workers describe racism and discrimination, NYT reports

Image
Over two dozen current and former black Tesla employees are describing racial discrimination in a New York Times investigation today that looks into the company’s Fremont factory. The complaints range from being barred from promotions, forced to scrub the factory floors, and allege that supervisors have directed racial slurs at employees. The allegations come from a variety of interviews, internal communications, and legal statements acquired by The New York Times . Tesla disagrees that the factory is a harbor for racial discrimination, and says that there isn’t “a pattern of discrimination and harassment,” at the Fremont factory. “Tesla opposes all forms of discrimination, harassment, and unfair treatment, and we strive to provide a... Growing hemp is about to be legal for the first time in nearly a century

Image
Congress just reached an agreement on proposed legislation that could make hemp legal to grow in the United States for the first time in nearly a century. Hemp may be derived from the same plant as marijuana, but it doesn’t make anyone high and is commonly used in food, fuel, and bracelets . The new legislation officially acknowledges the difference between the two. Technically speaking, hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Though its derivatives have been used for everything from textiles to medicine , hemp is currently everywhere in the form of a trendy ingredient called cannabidiol (CBD). Manufacturers promise that CBD will... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2SmonYi

Before Game of Thrones and Nightflyers, George R.R. Martin’s work inspired a great Outer Limits episode

Image
There are so many streaming options available these days, and so many conflicting recommendations, that it’s hard to see through all the crap you could be watching. Each Friday, The Verge ’s Cut the Crap column simplifies the choice by sorting through the overwhelming multitude of movies and TV shows on subscription services and recommending a single perfect thing to watch this weekend. What to watch “Sandkings,” the two-part premiere episode of Showtime’s mid-1990s The Outer Limits revival. The second iteration of the 1960s science fiction / fantasy / horror anthology was generally more adult than the original (sort of a hard PG-13), but it told the same kinds of creepy cautionary tales, often adapted from the work of some of the era’s... #ThotAudit is just the latest tactic people are using to harass sex workers online

Image
Over the past few days, sex-work Twitter has been abuzz about a somewhat unexpected topic: taxes. A tweet from amateur clip producer and webcam model Mocha Puff that declared, 11 times and in all caps, that, contrary to some people’s assertions, “sex workers do pay taxes,” was retweeted over 1300 times; in follow-up tweets, Puff shared links to some sex-work-friendly tax professionals, as did other members of the sex-work community. Why the sudden obsession with sex workers’ financial responsibility to the government? It all started with #ThotAudit, a harassment campaign that encouraged people to report sex workers — and, more specifically, sex workers who sell access to private Snapchat accounts — to the IRS for failure to pay their... The fight over who gets to have the most-subscribed channel on YouTube spilled into the real world months ago when Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg fans started campaigning to raise awareness of the Swedish star. The grassroots effort has, for the most part, been in good fun — but recently, people on social media have reported being hacked by someone who is urging them to subscribe to PewDiePie. Kjellberg has maintained his status as the top channel on YouTube for years now, but recently, his claim to the throne has been increasingly threatened by T-Series , a channel owned by an Indian music production company. Niantic teases long-awaited Pokémon Go battles

Image
It looks like one of the most anticipated Pokémon Go features is finally on its way. In a series of tweets , developer Niantic teased what sure looks like player-versus-player battles. It’s a feature the developer has promised for some time, and it’s an integral part of the traditional Pokémon experience. In fact, battles were part of the initial pitch when Pokémon Go was first announced back in 2015 . But, much like trading , battles took longer than anticipated to actually implement in the game. Unfortunately, right now, we don’t know anything about how the feature will work or when it will be available. But given the tease, it likely won’t be long before battles are officially unveiled. Overwatch is still king of Tumblr, but self-generated fandom rules the rest

Image
On gaming Tumblr, Overwatch rules. Blizzard has built a deep and compelling backstory for its team-based multiplayer shooter through animated shorts, comics, and character bios; even if you’ve never played a single match, you can still immerse yourself in a world teeming with fan art and fan fiction. Every year, Tumblr analyzes tens of thousands of lines of data — posts, tags, searches, reblogs — to rank and reveal its top trends of the year. In 2018’s gaming category, that ranking looks slightly different than usual: in addition to the larger list for video games, this year’s roundup also includes one for mobile, to better account for fandoms around titles like Overwatch , Undertale , or Life Is Strange , vs. mobile hits like Harry Potter:... How Googlers organized against the company’s China plans

Image
This week, Google’s messy fight over Chinese censorship spilled out into the open. More than 600 Googlers have now publicly signed an open letter opposing Google’s Dragonfly project , a search engine that would make controversial concessions to China’s internet censorship regime. Other Googlers have signed a counter-letter defending the project , although that letter has not been made public. Nearly 1,000 employees have signed one of the two letters, including their name and job title with no gesture toward anonymity. Labor laws offer some level of protection for this kind of public stand, but there’s still a real risk of retaliation, which is one of the reasons why it’s so rare for employees to air their concerns publicly. But for those... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2FPIsVA

How the company behind TikTok became the world’s most valuable startup

TikTok is inescapable right now, and it’s not just teens paying attention — it’s rocked the business world as well. Bytedance, the owner of the wildly popular short-form video app , is now valued at more than $75 billion following a new round of investment. This means Uber has unexpectedly lost its long-held title of the world’s most valuable tech startup to a low-profile challenger from China. You could be forgiven for not having heard the name Bytedance before the recent news. The founder, 35-year-old Zhang Yiming, rarely gives interviews, and the company’s Western-facing media presence is close to nonexistent. But the company’s global ambitions are real and so are its chances. Bytedance is the first Chinese internet company with a... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2BIU4FG

Apple Music is coming to Echo devices next month

Amazon’s Echo smart speakers already support a variety of music services, including Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. And from December 17th , Apple Music will join this little cohort. Apple Music users will be able to ask Alexa to play favorite songs, artists, and albums, as well as any of the streaming service’s curated playlists and radio stations. Echo owners will simply need to enable the Apple Music skill in the Alexa app, link their account, and they’ll be good to go. Making Apple Music available on Echo devices might seem to run counter to Apple’s usual strategy of using services as a lure for hardware (and vice versa). But the company can apparently see the sense of making its streaming service available on the most... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2Q46roD

PUBG Mobile tips and tricks: Easy chicken dinner with these vehicle and driving tips

Image
It’s the start of a new season in PUBG Mobile and players are gearing up to increase their in-game rank. In maps as ginormous as the ones that PUBG Mobile sports, vehicles and driving can get you a long way. With a slew of vehicles strewn across, they might often feel an overbearing sense of confusion when it comes to vehicle choice and the correct way of using them. However, vehicles, when used right, can launch a player into the top spots in the game, allowing them to avoid losing points and continue rising up the ranks. All three in-game maps, Erangel, Miramar and Sanhok, sport a set of common vehicles as well as a couple of map-exclusive vehicles, that seem to be a better fit for the corresponding terrain.  With the introduction of FPP driving in PUBG Mobile (about time!), players are seen bifurcated into two very distinct groups, a group of players that immensely enjoy FPP driving while the other group that strongly dislikes the new style of driving and vehemently refuses to use

11 charged for selling Samsungs bendable display technology to Chinese rivals

Image
Prosecutors in South Korea have charged 11 people for illegally selling Samsung’s bendable screen technology to a Chinese rival company. According to Bloomberg, the CEO of Samsung supplier Toptec, and eight of his employees had received 15.5 billion won (approx $13.8 million) for conspiring and transferring information regarding organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. Samsung uses OLED panels in its phones, televisions and monitors. The two others were from the Chinese company with whom they hatched the conspiracy. Bloomberg says that intellectual property theft is a national concern for South Korea and the country is spending billions for becoming self-sustaining in areas such as memory chips and displays, two fields where Samsung is the world leader. On the revelation, Samsung Display said it was “shocked at the results of the investigation by prosecutors, at a time when competitors are intensifying their technological rivalry.” Samsung said that it would keep a close eye on t

Motorola G7 Power might feature 5000mAh battery, run on Android 9 Pie out-of-the box

Image
Motorola generally releases three phones under its G series where the Play and Plus variants represent devices with less or more powerful hardware, while the one without any moniker bridges the gap between the two. This time, the smartphone manufacturer could be introducing a new model as the Motorola G7 Power, which might sit somewhere between the G7 and the G7 Plus variants. XDA Developers report that the Motorola G7 Power has now appeared on FCC. An image revealing the dimensions of the phone has also leaked out, along with some additional information like the device’s rear design and connectivity options.  As per the report, the Motorola G7 Power sports the model number XT1955-4 and it might come equipped with a large 5000mAh battery. This doesn’t seem far-fetched since the company’s recently launched Motorola One Power also features a 5000mAh battery. In terms of dimensions, the device is said to measure 159 mm x 76 mm and 167 mm (6.5-inch) diagonally. While there are no more spe

The Asus has announced its gaming smartphone “Asus Rog” back in July this year at Computex 2018. The phone has been finally launched in India this Thursday. The smartphone comes with an AMOLED display and a 90Hz refresh rate. On the other hand, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which has been released with a triple camera setup at the back is priced at Rs 69,990 in India. Let’s start with a quick specification comparison to know which flagship device packs a better hardware under its hood.  The Asus Rog gaming smartphone sports a 6.0-inch display that offers a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. On the other hand, the Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro, which comes with a bigger 6.39-inch display offers a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels.  When it comes to the processor, the Asus Rog is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, while the Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro is backed by a Kirin 980 octa-core processor.  As far as the cameras are concerned, the highlight of Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro is its cameras as it comes

E Ink’s latest screen is designed to let you write with zero latency

Image
E Ink, the company that produces the Kindle’s low-power display, has announced the JustWrite — a new display that can be written on with almost no latency. It achieves this by having the new display be driven by its stylus itself rather than the TFT backplates that have been used for previous displays. The change potentially means that only the stylus itself needs to be powered, although the screen itself may still require a small amount of power to refresh itself to erase any writing or drawings. Although small E Ink notepads like the reMarkable tablet are the first things that come to mind when thinking about the potential uses for the JustWrite screen, screens that are up to 3-feet wide are also possible, theoretically allowing the... A looming strike over Project Dragonfly is putting new pressure on Google

Image
Officially, Google’s preferred description for Project Dragonfly is “exploratory.” “This is an exploratory project and no decision has been made about whether we could or would launch,” the company said today , in the wake of a significant new report on its plans for a censored search engine in China. ”Exploratory” is a word that conjures the earliest stages of development — of the conquistador, standing at the shore of a new land, surveying rough its shape and character. But according to Thursday’s report by The Intercept ’s ace Dragonfly chronicler Ryan Gallagher, Google’s explorations had already reached the final stages of development by the time word of the project leaked.
