YouTube TV and NBCUniversal agree to ‘short’ extension to avoid channels disappearing

Image
Photo Illustration by Rafael Henrique/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Following a public standoff earlier this week, YouTube TV and NBCUniversal have agreed to a “short” extension over the streaming service carrying several of the broadcaster’s channels. That means that at least for now, YouTube TV will continue to carry more than a dozen major NBCUniversal-owned channels, including NBC regional sports networks. But it also means YouTube TV’s monthly subscription cost won’t be getting $10 cheaper. Had talks broken down, NBCUniversal programming would have been removed from YouTube TV at midnight ET. “NBCUniversal and YouTube TV have agreed to a short extension while parties continue talks,” an NBCUniversal spokesperson tells Protocol and Vulture . “NBCUniversal will not go dark on YouTube TV at midnight... EA promotes Laura Miele to COO, making her one of the most powerful women in gaming

Image
Photo By Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile via Getty Images Electronic Arts is promoting chief studios officer Laura Miele to chief operating officer, the company announced Thursday . The change is a big promotion for Miele, who already had significant leadership at the company overseeing 25 different studios. The new role will give Miele greater oversight over the company and arguably makes her the most powerful woman in gaming, an industry where there are few female executives, fewer in the C-suite, and where those C-suite execs are often in charge of HR or finance rather than the company’s products. Ubisoft did make Virginie Hass its chief studios operating officer last August, following scandals over a toxic culture including sexual harassment and misconduct that went as high as the C-suite... Zoom won’t buy Five9 after all

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Five9 will remain independent — its deal to be acquired by Zoom is off. Though a press release from Five9 says it was “terminated by mutual agreement,” it’s also the case that Five9 shareholders rejected the $14.7 billion deal. Zoom originally announced the acquisition on July 18th . Five9 automates managing customer contacts for businesses, and the deal was supposed to bolster Zoom’s business offerings. Its major competitors are behemoths like Microsoft and Google, and the deal would have helped the smaller company expand. This was supposed to be an all-stock transaction , but unfortunately for Zoom, its stock price has lost more than a quarter of its value since they announced the acquisition. Usually, when a company is bought,... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3F6kIqL

Disney and Scarlett Johansson have settled their lawsuit

Image
Image: Marvel Studios Three months after Scarlett Johansson sued Disney over its streaming release of Black Widow , arguing she stood to lose millions of dollars because her salary was based on the box office performance of the film, the suit has now been settled, according to The Hollywood Reporter , Variety , and The New York Times . While the terms of the settlement don’t appear to be public, both parties have paid lip service to continuing to work together. Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” and “look[s] forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.” “We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming... Pixel phones can automatically record and upload video in an emergency

Image
One of the features Google offers exclusively through its Pixel Android phones is the Personal Safety app. Over the years, it’s added features like a safety check-in that automatically notifies your emergency contacts if you don’t respond as scheduled and the ability to automatically dial 911 if it detects you’ve been in a car accident . Now XDA-Developers and Android Police point out a new feature that can automatically record video if you activate the built-in Emergency SOS. We installed the update from Google Play on a Pixel device. It informs users that it can record continuously for up to 45 minutes once it’s activated, assuming your phone has enough storage. If there’s an internet connection, the video will get automatically backed... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2Y1hL9S

How the Surface Laptop Studio and Surface Pro 8 stack up against other creator laptops

Image
Photo by Becca Farsace / The Verge Microsoft announced a new version of the Surface Pro last week, along with the Surface Laptop Studio . The Surface Pro 8 feels very much like a logical evolution of Microsoft’s tablet / laptop. Some of the more notable improvements include a 120Hz display with slimmer bezels, Thunderbolt 4 support, as well as a reworked surface keyboard that includes a dedicated space to store and charge the new Surface Slim Pen 2 . Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop Studio features a uniquely hinged screen and more powerful hardware. This is effectively a replacement for the Surface Book 3, with a three-point adjustable display that can lay flat for drawing or snap upright to deliver a more traditional laptop experience. Before Astro, these were the robots people invited home

Image
The 2017 version of Aibo, Sony’s robot dog. | Sam Byford / The Verge Amazon announced its Astro home robot on Monday , which is designed to be an Alexa on wheels that can also bring you stuff ( if other people load it into the cargo bay ) and act as a sort of guard dog. With a touchscreen for a face and the ability to move itself around a single story of your house, it’s a bit like the personal robots from decades of science fiction. Given that Amazon seemingly wants to continue making home robots, though, we figured we’d go through a little history to look at some previous attempts. Of course, there’s plenty of discussion to be had about what does or does not count as a robot — to anyone with a smart home setup, Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant could be considered robots, as they can do any number of tasks... Cruise gets the green light to give driverless rides to passengers in San Francisco

But while Cruise was approved to give rides in its fully driverless vehicles without safety drivers, Waymo only is allowed to deploy its autonomous vehicles with a human monitor behind the wheel. In order to give rides to paying passengers in its fully driverless vehicles, as it does in Arizona, the Google spinoff would need to apply for an additional permit from the California Public Utilities Commission . Waymo was the first company to receive a driverless testing permit in 2018. And while the idea of a fully autonomous ride-hailing service is... Nintendo denies rumours of Switch Pro

Image
Nintendo recently unveiled a new version of its popular Switch console called the Switch OLED. The new version offered an OLED display with thinner bezels, larger internal storage and more. However, there were initial reports that the Japanese company was planning to launch an even more powerful version of its console with support for 4K gaming. With the launch of the Switch OLED, it looks like those rumours were nothing more than that. Or was it? A report by Bloomberg seems to suggest that the ‘Switch Pro’ may have existed, at least for a time. The publication claims that 11 game companies were in possession of Nintendo’s 4K development kit for the Switch. It further adds that these companies were from all around the globe and ranged from large publishers to small studios. The report calls out Zynga Inc. as being one of the companies. Nintendo refutes rumours However, since the story has been published, both Zynga and Nintendo have tried to squash the rumours. Zynga spokesperson, Sa

Slack’s down for some people, so now’s the time to take a walk

The differences in experiences point to a possible routing issue or the even more likely culprit, DNS (it’s always DNS). Some of my co-workers have had issues today, while it’s working fine for others (including, unfortunately, me). How to use Focus assist in Windows 11

Image
It’s all too easy to allow distractions such as social media or videos to seduce us from the things we’re supposed to be doing — such as, say, writing articles about Windows 11. Features such as Focus assist are now being included with operating systems to try to help us keep our eyes on the road, so to speak. Microsoft’s Focus assist was first introduced in a 2018 update of Windows 10, where it replaced a feature known as Quiet Hours, and while Windows 11 doesn’t offer any radical updates, it has made the feature easier to use. Focus assist stops notifications from popping up on your screen and can be activated automatically when you put on your display on presentation mode, are playing a game, or are using an app in full-screen mode. ... USB-C cables are getting new, confusing logos for faster 240W charging standard

Image
Photo by Vlad Savov / The Verge The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) — the group that maintains the USB standard across its many varied incarnations — has introduced new, official logos for companies to use to brand their USB-C cables and packaging to go with its USB4 and 240W power standards. The goal is a noble one, aiming to help ease the confusion about the different types of USB-C cables (which can differ widely in things like charging and data transfer speeds) when you’re buying one. Naturally, the USB-IF, in its... unique wisdom, has chosen to simplify things the only way it knows how: a slew of new logos that will soon adorn packaging for cables and chargers to help indicate to customers what charging and data speeds their devices support. FCC considers new rules to stop scammers from hijacking your cell phone

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Thursday said it’s looking into tightening rules around cell phone service, in an effort to rein in SIM swapping scams and port-out fraud, two ways fraudsters can access a person’s cell phone account and phone number for nefarious purposes. The agency says in a statement it has received numerous complaints “from consumers who have suffered significant distress, inconvenience, and financial harm” due to SIM swapping and port-out fraud. And, the FCC said, recent data breaches have exposed customer information that could make it easier for bad actors to carry out these kinds of attacks successfully. SIM swapping is when someone hijacks your cell phone number so they can intercept two-factor... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2Y5VoAg

In April 2020, the company fired Emily Cunningham and Maren Costa after they had organized a protest against Amazon’s work with oil and gas companies, as well as raising concerns with the company’s coronavirus measures at its warehouses. In a joint statement , Costa and Cunningham said that the company would have to pay them lost wages as well as inform employees that they couldn’t be fired for organizing. They haven’t mentioned whether they would be getting their jobs as UX designers back. Nintendo categorically denies that a 4K Switch Pro is in development

It is rare for a big company to come out and categorically deny an entire report, but that’s what Nintendo just did today — the Japanese corporate entity has issued a press release insisting that Bloomberg ’s seeming revelation that Nintendo was pushing developers to build 4K-resolution games for an upcoming but potentially canceled “Switch Pro” handheld was entirely incorrect. Nintendo writes the report “falsely claims that Nintendo is supplying tools to drive game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support” and insists that it’s “not true.” Separately, it says that it has no plans for any new Nintendo Switch other than the slightly refined OLED model that’ll be out next week. Microsoft Surface Pro 7 vs. Pro 8: what’s the difference?

Whereas the Surface Pro 7 starts at $549.99 , the Surface Pro 8 starts at $1,099.99, meaning it’s nearly double the price. And that’s also before you factor in the cost of Microsoft’s new stylus and detachable keyboard, two add-ons that are more like necessities if you intend to use the 2-in-1 as advertised. You can finally rate Apple’s apps on the App Store

Users, as Stack Overflow’s blog post notes, were disappointed to find out that The Key was not a real thing they could buy. So, you can buy it now. It’s up for preorder on Drop’s website for $29. Per the company, the next batch is shipping on December 13th. Image: Drop What more could you need? As you can see,... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/39Lzvc5

Withings’ latest hybrid smartwatch poses as a luxury dive watch

Image
The new Withings ScanWatch Horizon showing SpO2 oxygen saturation. | Image: Withings The ScanWatch Horizon is Withings’ latest hybrid smartwatch to combine a digital display with a traditional mechanical format. You buy a Withings because you hate the look of typical health-focused wearables and abhor the bombardment of notifications that plague other smartwatches. Withings says it took design inspiration for the 43mm ScanWatch Horizon from “luxury dive watches” like the Submariner or Seamaster — influences that can be seen in the reflection-free sapphire-glass casing with titanium finish, a stainless-steel rotating bezel, and luminescent watch hands and indicators for visibility in low light. Its water resistance is only rated at 10 ATM, however, making it ill-suited for deep dives. But it should be fine for swimming,... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3CPUzKI

iPhone 13 ‘unlock with Apple Watch’ bug fixed in iOS beta

Image
Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Apple has reportedly fixed the issue that broke the “unlock with Apple Watch” feature on iPhone 13 models. The feature, which lets Apple Watch users unlock their iPhones without a password when wearing a mask, now works again as of the second iOS 15.1 beta, as reported by 9to5Mac . Apple noted on its support page a few days ago that it was working on this problem. I’ve run into the issue myself on my personal iPhone 13 Pro and can confirm that it’s been pretty annoying after having gotten used to the feature since it was introduced earlier this year. Newer iPhones don’t have fingerprint readers, so the only way to unlock them when your mask interferes with Face ID is by using a password. There’s no word on when iOS 15.1 will be released... Garena Free Fire Max now available for download, but you still cant play it

Image
Garena's new game, Free Fire Max is now finally available to download. To recall, the game was announced a little while back and promised to bring a bunch of new additions to the game, The game was up for pre-registration for a while and now players can finally download it. The game’s file size on Android is 0.96GB. Unfortunately, it seems like players will still have to wait a bit before they can play. When we tried to play the game, we were greeted with a message that says, “Limited test has ended. See you in the next test.” So most likely only a few lucky players were able to experience the game during that time.  It is not yet known when Garena will hold the next test for Free Fire Max, or even when the game will be available to play for all. Those who managed to pre-register for the game will receive in-game items such as the Cyber Max Loot Box which will include some unique in-game items like the Cyber Max Skyboard, Max Raychaser Bundle, and the Cybermax Loot Box. You can change your Nest doorbell ringtone starting next month

Image
You can soon set your Nest doorbell to cackle at your visitors. | Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge Google Nest is bringing back seasonal ringtones for its video doorbells, which now include the Nest Doorbell (wired) — previously known as Nest Hello — and the new Nest Doorbell (battery) . First up are Halloween-inspired tones, which will stick around through October, then the winter holiday-themed options arrive. For the past three years Nest has offered them, the ringtones have disappeared following the holidays, leaving you with the standard ding dong. But this year, the new Nest Doorbell will also get six “evergreen” ringtones that are usable year-round. They will arrive with the Halloween options, but Google tells me they aren’t coming to the older Nest Doorbell (wired). The spooky-themed ringtones should arrive on October 1st and... Amazon’s Astro cannot fetch your beer

Image
Astro did not put that beer there! | Image: Amazon Amazon introduced a new robot today with the face of an Echo Show , the sensor-laden body of Panera Bread delivery bot , and a pair of cupholders for a trunk . The instant it was announced, people clamored for a reason for its existence beyond “mobile camera with a cute face” and “potentially invasive surveillance drone.” Most seemed to settle on “beer fetcher.” But friend, a pair of cupholders does not a robowaiter make. While the $1,000 Astro could very well have a wide variety of capabilities beyond home surveillance, it’s not gonna be fetching you anything. For one, it reportedly sucks. “Astro is terrible and will almost certainly throw itself down a flight of stairs if presented the opportunity,” a source who claimed to work on the... Elon Musk slams Biden as ‘not the friendliest’ after White House EV summit snub

Image
Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk criticized President Joe Biden as “not the friendliest administration” after the White House snubbed his company last month. Musk’s comments came during a Code Conference interview and followed a tweet in which the Tesla CEO mocked Biden using similar insults as former President Donald Trump. The Biden administration invited auto executives to the White House last month to discuss the shared goal of increasing the production of electric vehicles. Top officials from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis were invited. But Tesla, which is the largest EV maker in the world, was not. “Controlled by the unions” One potential reason that Tesla wasn’t invited is that its factory workforce is not unionized, while... Elon Musk: ‘we probably don’t need’ NDAs for Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ beta

Image
Asa Mathat Tesla has been making participants in the “Full Self-Driving” beta test sign non-disclosure agreements , but CEO Elon Musk said Tuesday “we probably don’t need” them. The reason? “There’s a lot of videos” being shared of the beta software in action, Musk said on Tuesday during the 2021 Code Conference. “People don’t seem to listen to me” and are “just ignoring it anyway.” “I don’t know why there’s an NDA,” he said. Tesla has had a small group of owners testing out the beta version of its “Full Self-Driving” software — which, despite the name, does not make the company’s cars fully autonomous — on public roads for about a year now. But this week, Vice reported that the company makes participants in the program sign NDAs. These agreements... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3zKnCO9

Amazon Astro is ‘terrible’ and will ‘throw itself down’ stairs, developers reportedly claim

Image
When you see a flight of stairs. | Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge Some of the people building Amazon’s Astro home robot are not impressed with it, according to a report by Vice . One person who worked on the robot, which was announced today , reportedly called it a “disaster that’s not ready for release,” while another said it was “terrible,” and the idea that it’d be a useful accessibility device (part of Amazon’s pitch is that Astro can help with elder care) was “absurdist nonsense.” The sources also mentioned that the bot doesn’t handle stairs well, with one even saying that it would “throw itself down” them “if presented the opportunity.” To make matters worse, Vice also reports that the robot is fragile and that several devices had broken. That’s not great news for a $1,000 (or $1,449) robot that... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3uos0Bo
