Apple analyst says iPhone 13 Pro Max will have a slightly better main camera than the rest of the lineup

Image
Known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed light on what we can expect from the camera of the iPhone 13 family of smartphones. He says that the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the top of the line in the upcoming iPhone 13 series will have a slightly better main camera than the other phones in the lineup.  According to Kuo, the iPhone 13 Pro Max will have an f/1.5 aperture. The rest of the models in the iPhone 13 lineup will have an f/1.6 aperture, the same found on the iPhone 12 (review). Kuo says, “Since the iPhone 13 mini, 13 and 13 Pro share the same f1.6 7P wide-angle lens (vs. 13 Pro Max’s f1.5 7P wide-angle lens), Sunny Optical’s order is the most in demand item. We estimate that Sunny Optical will ship the iPhone 13’s 7P wide-angle lens to LG Innotek as soon as May”. The wider f/1.5 aperture will allow more light resulting in better low light photography, but to what degree this will improve over the f/1.5 aperture remains to be seen.  Kuo previously said that we can expect three improveme

Apple will use Tesla’s ‘megapack’ batteries at its California solar farm

Image
The construction site of the energy storage project at the California Flats solar farm. | Image: Apple Apple announced Wednesday that it’s building a big battery storage project at a Northern California solar farm it spearhead in 2015. But what the company didn’t share is that the battery packs will come from Tesla, The Verge has learned. The newly-announced setup, which will store up to 240 megawatt-hours of energy, was approved by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors in 2020, according to documents submitted last year . It will consist of 85 Tesla lithium-ion “megapacks” and be used to help power the company’s corporate headquarters in Cupertino. Monterey County’s planning chief confirmed that Apple will use the Tesla batteries in an email to The Verge . Apple declined to comment. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Tesla... Amazon’s Alexa lets you control a Lamborghini’s air conditioning with just your voice

Image
Image: Lamborghini Amazon is taking a bigger step into cars today by integrating Alexa into Lamborghini’s Huracán EVO , and not just to ask questions or remotely control your home — it’s giving the assistant the ability to control settings inside the car, hands-free. The partnership was originally announced last year as part of Amazon’s push into cars, but the integration goes beyond Alexa’s usual bag of tricks. Alexa’s integration allows users to control “climate and comfort settings including air conditioning, heater, fan speed, temperature, seat heaters, defroster and air flow direction, as well as lighting,” Lamborghini says. (It can also pull up a screen showing you the car’s torque vectoring and traction control.) Of course, Alexa also has its own... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3wg3GBY

Now you can express yourself in the conversation with stickers. Add GIFs and Twemojis to a Fleet by tapping the icon, on Android... Ubiquiti is accused of covering up a ‘catastrophic’ data breach — and it’s not denying it

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Ubiquiti, a company whose prosumer-grade routers have become synonymous with security and manageability, is being accused of covering up a “catastrophic” security breach — and after 24 hours of silence, the company has now issued a statement that doesn’t deny any of the whistleblower’s claims. Originally, Ubiquiti emailed its customers about a supposedly minor security breach at a “third party cloud provider” on January 11th, but noted cybersecurity news site KrebsOnSecurity is reporting that the breach was actually far worse than Ubiquiti let on. A whistleblower from the company who spoke to Krebs claimed that Ubiquiti itself was breached, and that the company’s legal team prevented efforts to accurately report the dangers to customers.... Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine highly effective in adolescents

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The Pfizer / BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is highly effective in 12- to 15-year-olds, the companies announced today in a press release. None of the children who received the vaccine in a clinical trial developed COVID-19, and they all developed strong antibody responses. There were no serious side effects. The study included 2,260 participants. Around half received the two-dose vaccine, and the other half received placebo injections. There were 18 cases of COVID-19 found in the placebo group and none in the vaccine group. Based on the study, the vaccine was 100 percent effective in this age group. The study was small, though, so it’s difficult to say if that number will hold up in a larger group. “But obviously, it looks good for the... Spotify Mixes are new personalized playlists based on your favorite artists and genres

Image
A selection of the new mixes Spotify will generate for you. | Image: Spotify Spotify Mixes are a new family of personalized playlists populated with songs you already like and then supplemented with additional songs Spotify thinks you’ll like, based upon your favorite artists, genres, or music decades. The new Mixes are rolling out globally starting today for both free and premium Spotify subscribers. The music streaming service already offers a similar feature in the form of Daily Mixes, which appear in the same “Made for You” section. However, the problem with Daily Mixes is that it can be a little hard to work out the unifying theme of each playlist based on their vague names like “Daily Mix 1” and “Daily Mix 2.” Sometimes you can work it out from the included songs, but other times it can be more mysterious.... Fiat made a ‘Hey Google’ car

Image
The ‘Hey, Google’ logo appears above the front wheel arches of the new Fiat 500 vehicles | Image: Google / Fiat As vehicles are increasingly defined by their digital features, tech companies are seeking out ever-closer partnerships with carmakers. A new collaboration between Google and Fiat, though, is the most extreme we’ve seen yet. Three new special edition Fiat 500s — the Fiat 500, 500X crossover, and 500L MPV — have been branded with Google livery that extends from using the tech giant’s corporate colors in the cars’ seat upholstery to placing “Hey Google” badges above their front wheel arches. Having this sort of branding inside a car is not unusual, but this is the first time we’ve seen a tech company’s logo appear on a vehicle’s exterior . A press release from the Italian automaker (translated by Google, of course) boasts that the vehicles... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3fxBcOe

Huawei offsets US sanctions with dominance in China

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Huawei has released its annual report and financial information for 2020, demonstrating the effect that US sanctions had on its business last year. The report shows that while revenue from North America and Europe has fallen significantly, stronger performance in China has allowed the company to record higher sales and net profit than a year ago. Huawei doesn’t report traditional quarterly earnings, since it’s a private company with an unusual employee ownership structure. Its annual reports tend to be the best look at how it’s actually performing. The company’s revenue for 2020 was 891.4 billion yuan, a 3.8-percent increase on 2019. The changes build on previous tweaks to News Feed functionality. Last October, Facebook introduced a “ Favorites ” tool that allows users to select up to thirty friends and pages, prioritizing their content or displaying it in a separate feed. The company also offers users the option to sort their feeds by “ most recent ,” but buries these options in obscure menus. YouTube experimenting with removing dislikes, shooting themselves in the foot in the process

Image
In one of the most puzzling moves ever, YouTube is experimenting with disabling the dislike button on the platform. Apart from being the worst idea ever, YouTube has stated that this move is supposed to discourage ‘dislike mobs’ from downvoting videos. It’s the most asinine reason given, but hey, it’s their won platform right? YouTube has stated that the dislike button could be disabled for the public but the channel owner will still be able to view the dislikes on their own YouTube Studio page. So, if this is about curbing bullying, allowing the user to still see the dislikes is rather hypocritical.   In response to creator feedback around well-being and targeted dislike campaigns, we're testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count. If you're part of this small experiment, you might spot one of these designs in the coming weeks (example below!). pic.twitter.com/aemrIcnrbx — YouTube (@YouTube) March 30, 2021 Various publications have praised the move

Apple WWDC 2021 to now be hosted as an online-only event

Apple to begin A15 production in May, 4nm chip in 2022: Report

Image
Apple's next-gen A15 chip will reportedly go into production starting may. As expected, the Cupertino-giant will continue its manufacturing partnership with TSMC. A new report by Digitimes claims that Apple will begin production of its A15 chipset in May, keeping the launch of the new iPhone 13 later this year. The Apple A15 chip is said to use the same 5-nanometer fabrication size similar to its predecessor - the A14. Apple A15 chip begins production in May The Digitimes report also suggests that the new chip will be made using an "enhanced" manufacturing process despite having the same fabrication size at 5nm. To recall, the A14 was the first mass-produced chip to use the 5nm process, assuring great coordination between Apple and TSMC.  The 5nm fabrication process will remain, so the major performance improvements should ideally come through architectural changes, which Apple has been quite efficient in the recent past. Either way, it's not surprising to know tha
