Watchout Netflix, Disney+ launching in India via Hotstar on April 3

Image
Disney+ was originally set to launch in India via Hotstar on March 29 but is now officially launching on April 3. The information comes from Hotstar's Twitter account. The Tweet reads, “This is not a drill! The biggest Super Heroes, magical stories for everyone, exclusive Disney+ Originals and all that you've been waiting for are (finally) landing on Disney+ Hotstar. 3rd April. Really.” According to TechCrunch, the subscription fee for the service will go up from Rs 999 per annum to Rs 1499 per annum. Hopefully, we will get to see a bump in the streaming quality as well, but that is something we will know when the service is publicly available.  TechCrunch goes on to say that there is a more affordable plan priced at Rs 399. This plan will include movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along with live sporting events and a catalogue of movies and shows along with Hotstar originals. The 399 plan will not include Disney+ Originals. The Rs 1499 plan, however, will offer

Xiaomi to hike prices of smartphones after 6 percent increase in GST on mobiles

Image
Xiaomi smartphones are set to get more expensive, and the company is putting the blame on the Indian government for it. Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi MD announced on Twitter that because of the hike in GST in smartphones, the company has no choice but to hike the prices, keeping its 5% profit philosophy in mind. GST on mobile phones saw a 50 per cent hike from 12 per cent in the last financial year to 18 per cent from April 1, 2020, onward. With Xiaomi’s philosophy of only making a 5 per cent margin on its hardware, the company has had to increase the prices of Mi and Redmi smartphones, as explained by Manu Kumar Jain on Twitter. This app lets musicians remotely jam out on loops in real time

Image
Image: Endlesss Collaborative music-making app Endlesss is now available for iOS . The app’s been in beta for quite a long time , so newcomers will find that there’s already a community using Endlesss and sharing and discussing projects on the software’s dedicated Discord server . Even though Endlesss is a music-making app, it’s not really meant for making complete songs. It’s a collaborative “virtual musical hangout with a live chat room” that lets multiple users build and change loops of music in real time. Just select a project and start tapping out drum patterns and melodies to change up someone’s loop. You can make stuff just for yourself, but the social aspect is encouraged. Open loops where anyone can remix layers on the fly sounds like a recipe... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2R1savV

The Fitbit Charge 4 is a much more powerful fitness tracker disguised in its old body

Image
The first Fitbit after the company was acquired by Google last fall looks... well, like every other Fitbit that came before it. And it’s apparently intentional, as the company wants to expand on one of its most popular fitness trackers that’s long due for an update. The Fitbit Charge 4 is pretty much exactly as the leaks ahead of its official announcement teased : it’s essentially the look and feel of the Charge 3 with built-in GPS, Spotify control, and other high-end features typically found on Fitbit’s smartwatches like Fitbit Pay, app notifications, smart wake, and an SpO2 sensor . The $149 tracker has a battery life of up to seven days, or up to five hours with continuous GPS use. Up to seven days of battery life, or five hours with... Google ends sales of the Pixel 3

Image
Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Google has officially stopped selling its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, as spotted by Android Police . The product page for the phones now simply redirects to the Google Store’s homepage, with Google confirming that it has sold through its inventory (although the phone do remain available, for now, at third-party retailers like Best Buy or Walmart.) The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were announced and released in October 2018 , with the phones praised at the time for their larger displays, excellent cameras, and clean design. The phone’s camera in particular still holds up against many of the best smartphones on sale today, although the Pixel 3 and 3 XL suffered from the same issues most of Google’s Pixel phone do — slow sales and a lack of... How to make your own yeast for baking

Image
Photo by AAron Ontiveroz/The Denver Post As more people bake their blues away while stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, yeast is reportedly becoming harder to find on grocery store shelves. There’s no shame in turning to carbohydrates for comfort in times like these. But what’s one to do when a key ingredient for satisfying that craving is becoming as elusive as a roll of toilet paper? Though baker’s yeast may be dwindling in stores, more and more recipes for making it at home are popping up on Twitter. If baking is your way of taking this moment to learn something new or become more self-sufficient, coming up with your own yeast could be the next survival skill to hone. Baker’s yeast is actually just a fungus that, like me, loves eating sugar. So whether or not it’s... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/39CIJoA

Image
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the nationwide lockdown in India, people are working from home. When working from home, they are resorting to video conferencing apps to stay in touch with friends, family, and co-workers as well. One such app which has gained popularity is Zoom. To tell you the kind of popularity the service has gained, on the Google Play store it has been downloaded more than 100,000,000 times. To put things into perspective, on the Google Play Store, TikTok has been downloaded more than 500,000,000 times and WhatsApp has been downloaded more than 5,000,000,000 times.  Coming back to Zoom, it is a video conferencing app with the ability to have 100 people in a meeting. Since the app is used by business and consumers alike and is easy to use to set up conferences, it has become the go-to solution.  However, not everything was a bed of roses for the service. Turns out, the app was sending personal information back to Facebook, albeit unwittingly. After a massive up

Moto Razr sale delayed due to coronavirus lockdown

Image
Motorola has pushed the sale date of the foldable Moto Razr from April 2 to April 15 in India. The sale has been postponed due to the nation-wide lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus. The lockdown also limits e-commerce portals to deliver only essential products at the moment. This is among multiple other steps the company has taken in adherence to the lockdown orders, including shutting its factories, offices and service centres. The lockdown imposed from March 23 will last till April 14. Post that, deliveries are expected to start normally. The foldable Moto Razr (first impressions) is priced Rs 1,24,999 and is set to be sold via Flipkart and in other offline stores. The phone comes with the Snapdragon 710 under the hood with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The highlight is, of course, the clamshell design borrowed from the older Moto Razr series, achieved through a bendable display measuring 6.2-inches when unfolded. Samsung Display is getting out of the LCD business

Image
Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Samsung Display will stop producing LCD panels by the end of the year. The display maker currently runs two LCD production lines in South Korea and two in China, according to Reuters . Samsung tells The Verge that the decision will accelerate the company’s move towards quantum dot displays, while ZDNet reports that its future quantum dot TVs will use OLED rather than LCD panels. The decision comes as LCD panel prices are said to be falling worldwide. Last year, Nikkei reported that Chinese competitors are ramping up production of LCD screens, even as demand for TVs weakens globally. Samsung Display isn’t the only manufacturer to have closed down LCD production lines. LG Display announced it would be ending LCD production in South Korea... Intel has its laptop work cut out this year

Image
Photo by Avery White / The Verge Even if you would never see yourself buying a gaming laptop, you should take the time to read Monica Chin’s review of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. There are a lot — I mean a LOT — of remarkable things about this laptop. First and foremost, it is running on the AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS chip, which runs at 35W with 8 cores at 3.0 GHz that can boost up to 4.4 GHz. In context, what that actually means is that it outclasses anything Intel has put into a laptop to date. I’ve been anticipating this release ever since Nilay Patel interviewed AMD CEO Lisa Su earlier this year. She talked big game then, and by all accounts her company has delivered. What’s most remarkable about this laptop is that by gaming laptop standards it is absolutely thin and... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3bE5KIT

The US government should disclose how it’s using location data to fight the coronavirus

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Last week, we talked about the case for the government using location data gleaned from our smartphones to manage the response to the COVID-19 pandemic . Taiwan, Israel, and England have all been using location data in various ways to understand the spread of the disease and, in some cases, enforce orders requiring citizens to isolate themselves. Any such project comes with the risk that temporary infringements on our privacy will become permanent. I expected the debate about location data might unfold over the next few weeks as the coronavirus reaches more communities and its death toll surges. Instead, though, the United States government just went ahead and started analyzing our smartphone location data. The data is reportedly being... Working from home Check out these prepaid plans from Jio, Airtel and Vodafone to last the lockdown

Image
With two more weeks of the 21-day lockdown still left, there is surging demand in internet usage among Indians. This is also the time when a majority of people working from home could be exhausting their daily data limit before the day is over. As such, there is a need for additional data while people are working from home, and telecom companies are stepping up to cater to it. Majority of internet users in India rely on mobile data and wireless broadband for connectivity at home. The number, according to TRAI is at a whopping 642.90 million while a meagre 19.14 million use wired broadband connections. This means that a lot of professionals are using mobile data to work from home, and as a result, exhausting their data packs quickly. Telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea anyway offer additional data via top-up plans, but now the operators are raising the data limits in the main prepaid plans as well. Here we take a look at the most data-heavy and afford

Huawei says US trade ban is a ‘big difficulty’ to selling phones

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Huawei’s revenue grew by 19.1 percent last year to around $121 billion, but the company says those numbers would be far higher if the United States had not cracked down on its ability to do business. Due to a trade ban initially ordered last May , Huawei is unable to acquire US parts and software or sell its products in the US. That has cut the company out of an important market and hurt its ability to compete outside of China. “The consumer business has been the major business for our growth,” said Vincent Pang, president of Huawei’s western Europe business, in a call with reporters to discuss the company’s 2019 financial results. He called 2019 a “big challenge” for the company. “That gave us a quite a big difficulty.” While Huawei... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2xGxM7R

YouTube streaming limited to 480p in India by Google

Image
As the world grapples with social distancing, and India goes into what feels like its nth day of lockdown, YouTube has announced that they’re going to be changing the playback quality of the video playback to standard definition (SD) or more commonly known as 480p. The decision comes after Google observed a major uptake in the number of people streaming YouTube videos throughout the day. The move comes in the wake of the fact that more people are now stuck at home, whether working or not and hence, streaming more content as a means of passing the time. Across Europe, all streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime had reduced the default streaming quality as the infrastructure came under heavy load. Google says that the kind of uptake in traffic they’re seeing on YouTube “won't break the internet,” but the company is limiting the stream quality anyway to reduce the strain on ISP and telcos. In India, YouTube streaming has been capped at 480p, but only for mobile devices.

Both these titles are being adapted to support stay-at-home gaming since it’s no longer safe to venture outside and play these games. Some of the new features introduced to ensure you stay at home while playing includes the following — - Niantic’s Adventure Sync function will now track indoor steps like running on a treadmill, cleaning the house or making other indoor movements. - Niantic games will encourage in-game virtual meetups and let players stay in touch without having to meet in real life. - You can soon be able to team up with friends and take on raid battles in Pok

Tackling coronavirus: Bluetooth-based contact tracking can be a good way to curb contagion

Image
While there’s neither a vaccine nor a cocktail of antibiotics that can successfully cure a patient of COVID-19, it’s not entirely impossible to stop the Coronavirus epidemic. The key to curbing the contagion that has now infected 199 countries is to conduct extreme contact tracing. Health officials not only need to find and isolate infected patients, but also those who came in contact with that person. The Ebola virus outbreak that occurred in 2016 in Africa was contained using this method and experts believe, the novel Coronavirus can also be contained in a similar way. Tracing who the infected person came in contact with can get quite cumbersome, especially in a country like India with one of the highest population densities in the world. Officials may not be able find out the exact number of people who came in contact with an infected person by interviewing and interrogating. It’s also noted that nearly half the transmission occurs before the person even starts showing symptoms. Th

Zoom stops sharing data with Facebook, issues apology

Schools and business alike are using video conferencing in order to try and bring some semblance of normalcy to their operations and one app that has really come to the forefront is Zoom. However, as with everything that has ever been popular, people were quick to find problems with Zoom. Turns out, the app was sending personal information back to Facebook, albeit unwittingly. After a massive uproar, Zoom has removed the offending code. The issue started with Zoom using Facebook Login. The company said that they wanted to make it easy for users to log into the app, hence the Facebook login. The login feature is implemented using the Facebook SDK, which connects the users of the app to Facebook’s Graph API. Once users log in, the SDK can then share information with third parties, and it is this behaviour that has caused concern amongst users. Additionally, Zoom’s terms o

And, in the midst of a worldwide lockdown to curb the menace of the Coronavirus outbreak, the usage has certainly spiked up. Previously, YouTube, Netflix and other streaming websites agreed to cut down their video quality to free up more bandwidth. Now, WhatsApp is also joining the league by limiting status videos to 15 seconds. But the FDA is restricting the number of masks that Battelle can decontaminate with its process to 10,000 per day. Kana Quest is a great puzzle game that just so happens to also teach you Japanese

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play , we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. Growing up, I played a lot of educational games on the Apple IIe, like Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
