This Cybertruck-inspired iPhone 11 Pro costs $15K and isn’t made by Tesla or Apple

Image
Phones are rounded rectangles now. Have been for years — ever since the iPhone killed the QWERTY slider dead. They’re getting rounder and rounder, in fact, as manufacturers continue to figure out how to bend OLED screens and raw metals to their will. They’re far too samey, unless you count an array of sci-fi inspired foldables that are so far basically just recreating the flip phone . I want something edgier to exist in the world. And now, just as Tesla’s Cybertruck shook up the world of automobile design , a Cybertruck-inspired phone has emerged to maybe, possibly, OK probably not inspire the same sort of design in phones. The exorbitantly priced Cyberphone , which is effectively just a fancy shell around an Apple iPhone 11 Pro, was... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2S6FzCK

Markets blogger Zero Hedge suspended from Twitter after doxxing a Chinese scientist

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter says it has permanently suspended markets blog Zero Hedge’s Twitter account, @ zerohedge , for violating the company’s platform manipulation policy . On Wednesday, Zero Hedge posted a blog that doxxed a Chinese scientist and strongly suggested without evidence that the scientist created the strain of coronavirus that’s currently spreading around the world. That blog lists a name, photo, email, and phone number that are reportedly tied to the scientist, and suggested that readers “pay [him] a visit” if they wanted to know “what really caused the coronavirus pandemic.” BuzzFeed News reported on Zero Hedge’s blog that doxxed the scientist earlier this evening, ahead of the Twitter suspension. The Verge is not publishing a link to Zero... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2Ojhc3D

Amazon’s Echo Show can now scan barcodes to flesh out your shopping list

Image
Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge In our review of the Amazon Echo Show 5 smart display , Dan called it the “smart alarm clock to get.” But I think I might move mine to the kitchen, right next to the garbage can. That’s partly because Amazon has just added the ability for the Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8’s camera to scan barcodes, and automatically add those items to your shopping list (via VentureBeat ). I might do that when I’ve got an empty package I’m about to toss in the trash. You start by saying “Alexa, scan this to my shopping list.” Up pops this screen: Image by Sean Hollister / The Verge I just tried it with a milk carton, orange juice, and a New Balance shoebox, and it seems to work fine in each case, adding each to my Alexa shopping list.... The guy who knew Nintendo’s Switch surprise ahead of time has pled guilty to hacking

Image
Photo by James Bareham / The Verge A California man has pled guilty to hacking Nintendo’s servers to steal confidential files, including taking information about the Nintendo Switch months before it was announced, the US Department of Justice revealed today . According to the DOJ, Ryan Hernandez, 21, and an associate phished a Nintendo employee in 2016 to get access to and steal confidential information from the company. In October 2017, the FBI contacted Hernandez and his parents to ask him to stop hacking, at which time Hernandez “confirmed that he understood the consequences of any future hacking.” Hernandez hacked into multiple Nintendo servers However, from at least June 2018 to June 2019, Hernandez continued to illegally access confidential corporate information,... Twitter adds threaded replies to iOS to make it easier to see ongoing conversations

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Twitter announced a subtle design change to its iOS app today that may go a long way in both making conversations easier to parse and to join. The change, which looks like it’s a change on Twitter’s end that does not require an update, is to the threading feature in the Twitter timeline, which currently does a poor job of differentiating between standard tweets and replies. The update now draws a concrete line between a parent tweet and the replies, with the replies indented slightly and connected by the series of vertical and horizontal lines. It makes a Twitter conversation look effectively like thread of connected notes. The feature was first demoed in the company’s experimental twttr beta app back in spring of last year . It only... Microsoft to block crapware downloads in its Edge browser

Image
Microsoft is planning to block potentially unwanted apps from being downloaded through its Edge browser. Known as crapware or adware, these apps aren’t necessarily malware but could be toolbars, stuffed with annoying ads or notifications, or bundle crypto miners. Edge already uses a SmartScreen Filter to protect against phishing and malware, but this feature also optionally blocks downloads that contain this potentially unwanted code. The new feature is appearing in beta builds of Microsoft Edge, which suggests it will roll out to the stable channel soon. Microsoft isn’t enabling this feature by default, though. You’ll need to enable it from the privacy and services part of Edge settings. Google and Mozilla also offer... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/36JNScT

Amazon wants Alexa to feel normal, Google wants its assistant to feel nostalgic

Image
Happy Friday — the Super Bowl is this weekend and some of the ads have begun to be released. The two that have struck me the most are from Google and Amazon, each taking a different tack to sell you on their respective intelligent assistants. They are very different. Amazon got Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi leading off the joke about what life was like before Alexa, then people asking other people throughout history things they’d normally ask Alexa. I was with it until there was a joke about refusing to erase the Nixon tapes which maybe was a little too on the nose given this past year’s voice-recording scandals . In any case, the motive is clear: make Alexa seem like an integral part of our lives now, like electricity or running... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2S7bWkt

Facebook’s trust problem isn’t about being understood

Image
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and News Corp CEO Robert Thomson debut Facebook News last year One of the most common and beloved tropes on a reality show comes when a contestant announces, often with a melodramatic flourish, that they are “ not here to make friends .” It’s an ingenious and endlessly useful phrase — one that is both recognizably true (the contestant’s only real goal is victory) and terrifying in its implications. A person who is not here to make friends is signaling that they might do anything to win. They lie, they cheat, they throw a glass of pinot grigio in your face — whatever it takes to become become the bachelorette. I thought of the phrase on Wednesday while reading Mark Zuckerberg’s comments, during Facebook’s quarterly earnings call, about his new goal for the 2020s. He said (emphasis mine): “We’re also... Facebook and Instagram to remove coronavirus misinformation

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook will remove false claims and conspiracy theories about the coronavirus if it risks causing harm to people who believe them, the company has announced . The policy applies across both Instagram and Facebook, and includes misinformation about fake cures or prevention methods, or any claim that could confuse people about what health resources are available. Hashtags used to spread misinformation on Instagram will also be blocked or restricted. The social media company has previously agreed to limit the reach of public health misinformation — such as anti-vax conspiracy theories — but removing content entirely is much rarer. The company says it has a policy of removing content when it creates the risk of physical harm. For example,... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2GIjvsN

Microsoft launches Xbox bug bounty program with rewards of $20,000 or more

Image
Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Microsoft is launching a new Xbox Bounty Program to reward gamers, security researchers, and anyone else who discovers security vulnerabilities in the Xbox Live network and services. Bounty rewards will range from $500 up to $20,000, and Microsoft notes there could even be higher payouts depending on the quality of the report and the vulnerability impact. The biggest payouts will be handed out for critical remote code execution and elevation of privilege flaws, while security feature bypasses, information disclosure, spoofing, and tampering will all include rewards up to $5,000. Speaking as part of a corporate management policy briefing following yesterday’s release of financial results, Furukawa instead pointed to today’s announcement of the new Animal Crossing -branded model . “According to the conventional wisdom for dedicated video game platforms, Nintendo Switch should be entering the midway phase of the hardware lifecycle,” Furukawa said. “But we believe we have built a foundation on which we can pursue further growth opportunities for Nintendo Switch.” It wouldn’t really be surprising if there were no new Switch hardware this year. Roku is losing Fox apps just in time for you to miss the Super Bowl, maybe

That might strike you as sudden, considering we reported this very morning that Fox Sports was working hard to bring a 4K HDR stream of the Super Bowl to Roku’s streaming sticks, pucks, and TVs. But minutes ago, Fox Sports removed references to Roku from multiple spots on its Super Bowl website, and we confirmed with Roku that seven channels in total are leaving... unless Fox and Roku strike a deal. ... Huawei overtakes Apple in annual race to Samsung’s smartphone crown

Image
Illustration by William Joel / The Verge Huawei overtook Apple to become the world’s second best selling smartphone manufacturer in 2019, according to reports from Strategy Analytics , Counterpoint Research , and Canalys. Over the course of the year, the Chinese manufacturer reportedly shipped around 240 million phones, compared to just under 200 million for Apple. Samsung retained its comfortable lead in first place, shipping just shy of 300 million devices. Xiaomi and Oppo rounded out the list of the top five manufacturers. The jump is especially surprising given Huawei’s continued presence on the USA’s entity list, which prevents the company from installing Google’s apps and services on its new devices, limiting their appeal outside of China. As a result, Huawei’s main... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2uPdw2r

Facebook is putting a surprising restriction on its independent oversight board

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge One of the year’s biggest stories at the intersection of technology and power is the Facebook Oversight Board. For the first time, a tech giant is seeking to give some of its power back to the people — in this case, in the form of an independent 40-member board that will serve as a kind of Supreme Court for content moderation. This week, Facebook announced that the board would likely begin hearing cases this summer — it also named the person who will lead the board’s staff , and released suggested bylaws. So, what are people saying about the news? At Wired , Steven Levy speculates that the board is likely to hear a case about Facebook’s policy against sending political ads out for fact-checking . A complaint by a target of a bogus... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2GCUqPL

Poco X2 will come with 27W fast charging support

Image
As the Poco X2 launch date - February 4 - is nearing, we are getting more information about its features bit by bit. The latest teaser has revealed the charging capacity of the handset. It says Poco X2 will have support for 27W fast charging. Considering the rumour that Poco X2 will be a rebranded Redmi K30 4G, this was already expected and the latest information further cements that rumour. Poco India tweeted to claim that the Poco X2 will take just 25 minutes to reach from zero to 40 percent charge. Interestingly, it did not show how much time the phone will take to get to 100 percent. On the other hand, Flipkart has updated Poco X2’s microsite to add that it will have support for 27W fast charging.  Poco has already confirmed that Poco X2 will come with a 120Hz refresh rate and feature a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm audio jack, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Other details regarding the device remain unknown. However, if it turns out to be a rebranded Redmi K30 4G, then Poco X2

Punxsutawney Phil should be replaced with AI groundhog, says PETA

Image
Punxsutawney Phil being held up to the crowds in 2019. | Photo by Jeff Swensen/Getty Images Since 1887, the residents of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania have maintained the belief that an immortal groundhog name Punxsutawney Phil can — and will — predict the end of winter. As popularized in the film Groundhog Day , each year on February 2nd, Phil is coaxed from his home in a tree stump and displayed to a baying crowd. If Phil “sees his shadow” there’ll be six more weeks of winter, say the top-hatted elders; if not, then an early spring is due. A robot groundhog would be more humane and more accurate, says PETA But it’s time for Punxsutawney to stop terrorizing an innocent rodent, says animal-rights group PETA. The existence of Realme fitness band was confirmed by Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth during his latest #AskMadhav episode. He confirmed that the product will be launched in India next month. The photo reveals a band that has a yellow colour strap and a large curved display panel. However, the display is turned off so we cannot tell whether the wearable sports a colour display or not. While the launch of the fitness tracker is just around the corner, very little is known about it. It is expected to be priced aggressively to compete with the Mi Band series. As for expected specs and features, the Realme fitness band is said to come with the regular steps and calorie counting features, alongside sleep tracking as well. Nokia 92 PureView could be first to sport an under-display camera

Image
That all-essential selfie camera on top of the display is the biggest reason why we see notches of different kinds and shapes on smartphones today. While we’ve seen many different workarounds for the ‘notch problem’, we have yet to see a workaround that puts the selfie camera behind the display. Nokia, it seems, could be the first one to come up with such a technology on its upcoming flagship smartphone. According to a tweet from online tipster Nokia anew, Nokia is currently “testing” its “under-the-display front camera” on the the Nokia 9.2 PureView. If Nokia succeeds in its venture, then the Nokia 9.2 PureView will be one of the first smartphones in the market to feature such technology and, hopefully, be more successful than previous models in the PureView family. Apart from wanting to learn how it works, smartphone critics such as ourselves will also want to understand just how ‘Pure’ the ‘View’ produced by the hidden camera is. Since Nokia hasn’t confirmed this development offici

Pokémon Sword and Shield were a huge hit over the holiday season, moving more than 16 million copies. That’s almost 4 million more than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate registered in its launch quarter a year ago, although Pokémon went on sale about three weeks earlier. Luigi’s Mansion 3 was another big success, selling over 5 million copies. Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Samsung Electronics just released fourth-quarter earnings that told much the same story as the rest of 2019. Revenue was more or less flat year-on-year — up 1 percent to 59.9 trillion won ($50.7 billion) — while operating profit slid 34 percent to 7.1 trillion won ($6 billion). The primary reason for the decline remains the fall in prices of memory chips, Samsung’s biggest profit driver in recent years. The display panel business also saw profits fall year-on-year due to weak demand. The mobile division, on the other hand, did better than a year ago, with Samsung calling out “solid” flagship sales and the profitability of phones like the Galaxy A series. Samsung is hoping that the wider adoption of 5G in 2020 will improve its numbers... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2uJ7GzT

The ramp of the Model 3 production will be delayed by a week and a half and the shutdown may “slightly” impact the company’s profitability in the first quarter of 2020, Tesla finance chief Zach Kirkhorn said. “At this point we’re expecting a one to one-and-a-half week delay in the ramp of Shanghai built Model 3s due to a government required factory shutdown,” he said on the call. Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook says it has agreed to pay $550 million to settle a class-action lawsuit regarding its use of facial recognition technology. Apple must pay $837 million for infringing Wi-Fi patents from Caltech, jury decides

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Nearly four years after the California Institute of Technology sued Apple and Broadcom for allegedly infringing four of the university’s patents on Wi-Fi data transmission, a federal jury has agreed that the two companies infringed — and has awarded $1.1 billion in damages to Caltech for the infringement, Law360 reports . Reporting from the courtroom today, Law360 writes that the jury ordered Apple to pay $837 million, with Broadcom owing $270 million. That seems to be based on Caltech’s hypothetical estimate of what it might have been able to negotiate in royalties back in 2010 — if Broadcom and Apple had actually struck a deal with Caltech before they put Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chips into new Apple devices. Caltech figured that Apple would... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3aTQs3i

The Scroll subscription service is an ingenious web technology hack

Image
Image: Scroll Welcome back to Processor , a newsletter about computers and also sometimes other things. You are probably expecting me to spend several paragraphs making fun of Google for creating yet another messaging product , as The Information reported yesterday. Not gonna do it: it’s enterprise-focused and from what I can tell about Google’s cloud business right now, a haphazard message app strategy is the least of their worries. Instead, the thing that blew my mind yesterday was Scroll, a new $5 per month subscription service that gives you a bunch of websites without ads. I kept on experiencing successive waves of small revelations when I thought about it. I’ll disclose now that Vox Media (and therefore The Verge ) are partners, but I had no idea... Google’s upcoming call recording feature could also support transcription

Image
Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verg Code discovered in the latest version of the Google Phone app has revealed more details about its unannounced call recording feature, 9to5Google reports . Most intriguing is a snippet of code that suggests the upcoming feature addition could also support call transcription, which would be similar to the Recorder app that the company debuted on the Pixel 4 . The newly uncovered code also gives us an idea of how Google is attempting to overcome the “ security and privacy implications ” that prevented call recording from being included in Android 10. Code snippets suggest that the app will warn you to comply with local laws while using the feature, and it also appears as though it will play a short audio clip to warn participants when a call is... Apple HomePod smart speaker lands in India at Rs 19,900

Image
Nearly two years after launching the HomePod in the US, Apple has introduced its first smart speaker in India. According to Apple’s official website, the HomePod is currently on sale in Space Gray and White colours for Rs 19,900. Apple has not yet mentioned when the HomePod will be available for orders in the country, though it’s expected to pop up on online stores such as Amazon and Flipkart sometime in the next few days. Apple’s HomePod competes directly with Amazon’s Echo line of smart speakers. The Apple HomePod is a cylindrical speaker with a fabric outer shell and a fixed power cable. Designed to be placed on a counter or bookshelf at home or in the office, it is powered by Apple’s proprietary digital assistant Siri to receive voice commands from nearby users. Like Amazon’s Echo speakers, it can play music or ambient sounds, report weather, manage calendar appointments, control connected home appliances, answer questions based on search results, etc. The Apple HomePod uses an a

Misinformation about the coronavirus is threatening to overwhelm tech platforms

Image
Women in Hong Kong sitting on the street with sanitary masks to prevent coronavirus infections. | Photo by Miguel Candela/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images One result of a world in which everyone has more or less equal access to publishing tools has been what’s sometimes called an epistemic crisis : a scenario in which large groups of people muddle along with very different understandings of reality, undermining the ability of elected officials to govern. This might be particularly scary during a catastrophe, when citizens are relying upon their government for accurate and potentially life-saving information. If you can’t trust official government announcements — or you are misled into thinking that an official-sounding hoax is real — catastrophes might begin compounding upon one another. The global outbreak of a coronavirus that originated in China has given us fresh reason to consider the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3b1kr9E

Apple’s Powerbeats 4 appear in latest iOS 13 update

Image
The icon shows the headphones with a cable attached to their rear rather than their front. | Image: MacRumors Apple could soon launch a new version of its Powerbeats earbuds if imagery discovered in the latest version of iOS by MacRumors is to be believed. The Powerbeats are Apple’s semi-wireless earbuds. The two earbuds are connected together by a single cable but connect wirelessly to a phone over Bluetooth. The last version of these earbuds were the Powerbeats 3 , released in 2016. From the icon, the biggest change with the Powerbeats 4 appears to be their cable location. While the Powerbeats 3’s cables descend from the front of the earbuds while you’re wearing them, the Powerbeats 4’s seem to descend from the back, down from the arms that hook over your ears. MacRumors also notes that they’re likely to include Apple’s latest H1 chip, and... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2vnTsEH

AI warehouse robots are sharing data to master human jobs

Image
A robot made by Covariant installed in Right now, in a warehouse not far from Berlin, a bright yellow robot is leaning over a conveyor, picking items out of crates with the assurance of a chicken pecking grain. The robot itself doesn’t look that unusual, but what makes it special are its eyes and brain. With the help of a six-lens camera array and machine learning algorithms, it’s able to grab and pack items that would confound other bots. And thanks to a neural network it will one day share with its fellows in warehouses around the world, anything it learns, they’ll learn, too. Show this bot a product it’s never seen before and it’ll not only work out how to grasp it, but then feed that information back to its peers. “We want a very high number of these machines out there.” ...
