Microsoft says hackers were able to see some of its source code

Image
As Microsoft continues to investigate the massive SolarWinds attack, the company says it has discovered that its systems were infiltrated “beyond just the presence of malicious SolarWinds code.” In an update from its Security Response Center , Microsoft says that hackers were able to “view source code in a number of source code repositories,” but that the hacked account granting such access didn’t have permission to modify any code or systems. While Microsoft points to “a very sophisticated nation-state actor” as the culprit, the US government and cybersecurity officials have implicated Russia as the architects of the overall SolarWinds attack. The attack exposed an extensive list of sensitive organizations , and today’s disclosure from... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3hvqVBf

Adobe Flash rides off into the sunset

Image
Adobe Flash Logo Adobe scheduled to end support for its famous Flash on December 31st, 2020, and today is the day. While Adobe won’t start blocking Flash content until January 12th, major browsers will shut it all down tomorrow and Microsoft will block it in most versions of Windows. It’s over. Flash enjoyed huge cultural relevance and looms large in web history, which might be why its funeral procession has lasted for years. Browsers started showing Flash the door early in the last decade, and in 2015 Adobe asked developers to move on to HTML5. Things became official in 2017, when Adobe announced it would end support. While Adobe is finally (mercifully) letting Flash go, it will live on in many historical artifacts. The Internet Archive is preserving... Trump’s fight to overthrow election now falls to the guy who invented the CueCat

Image
The CueCat barcode scanner | Tomkinsc In a hopeless attempt to overthrow an American election, a ridiculous cast of characters has heeded outgoing President Donald Trump’s call to misadventure — including, now, the inventor of one of the worst gadgets of all time. His name is Jovan Hutton Pulitzer, and yesterday he gave a poor imitation of a TED talk before the Georgia state senate , claiming that he has the ability to prove whether ballots from the 2020 election were real or fake. He introduced himself to a subcommittee of state senators as an “inventor and pattern recognition expert,” just before implying that he’s a titan even bigger than Apple and Google combined. “I’m on approximately about 12 billion devices globally,” he said. We’ll definitely grant that Pulitzer does h... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/34YBo3c

Instagram has once again dropped the ball on a ‘top nine’ year in review feature

Image
It’s New Year’s Eve, which means that your Instagram feed — if it’s anything like mine — is probably filled with people posting “ top nine ” grids of their most liked photos from this year. But, bafflingly, for yet another year, everyone will be turning to sketchy-looking third-party apps and sites to make them. Because once again, Instagram has failed to offer an official, automated way to curate the images within the app. As someone who personally enjoys using the top nine format to look back on a year of baked good photos, I’m left utterly confused by this. Users seem to love putting together the collages to look back on their past year of posts. Instagram even already offered grid tools for posting photos to your story in different... Reliance Jio to resume offering free domestic calls to any network from January 1

Image
Reliance Jio has announced that it will resume offering free domestic calls to any network from January 1. This comes after the company started charging for calls to other networks at 6 paise per minute due to the extension given by TRAI for the Bill and Keep regime. The new rule will dissolve any IUC (interconnected usage charges) that’s levied for domestic calls. “Honouring its commitment to revert off-net domestic voice-call charges to zero, as soon as IUC charges are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting 1st January 2021,” Jio said in a media statement. While the company was charging users for calls made to other networks it continued to offer free voice calls between Jio-to-Jio users. Previously, IUC charges were levied on off-net calls which were reduced from 14 paise to 6 paise per minute. The implementation of the Bill and Keep regime will abolish any IUC charges going further. TRAI is slated to implement this new regime from Janu...

We deserve The Muppet Great Gatsby

Image
Image: Disney When the clock strikes midnight this New Year’s, The Great Gatsby and other works copyrighted in 1925 will enter the public domain , becoming freely available for re-publication and — most importantly — puppet-themed adaptation. More than anything in 2021, I need the Muppet version of The Great Gatsby . Picture this: Kermit in period-specific 1920s dress, playing the mysterious host to a huge party in West Egg. Or Miss Piggy, decked out in flapper regalia, in an abusive relationship with Fozzie Bear as her cruel, philandering husband, Tom Buchanan. There’s obvious aesthetic charms to The Muppets version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, but beyond that, The Muppets’ takes on classic stories are often better. Writers for Bright... 8 great Apple Arcade games for your new 2020 iPhone or iPad

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge This time last year , Apple Arcade was still a fledgling service, but one with a lot of potential. For $5 a month, you could get unlimited access to a big library of interesting games, the kind that no one really sells in the App Store anymore . It’s still not a place to find the latest blockbusters, but Arcade has steadily evolved into one of the best deals in gaming. Its lineup of games is varied and consistently surprising, with everything from family-friendly multiplayer games to engrossing puzzlers to weird story-driven adventures. If you just picked up a new Apple device and have signed up for Arcade (a new device gets you three months free ) the sheer number of games available can be overwhelming. Here are a few great places to... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3rGncp9

Caviars PS5 Golden Rock Edition console makes rappers look plain and refined

Image
The design of the Sony PlayStation 5 is already pretty wild when it comes to consoles, thanks to its gigantic size, curves and lighting. In fact, compared to the Xbox Series X, one might even call it flashy. But what if wasn't flashy enough? What if you want it ostentatious enough to rival Dubai? Well, Caviar’s PlayStation 5 Golden Rock Edition might just be what the doctor ordered.  This ‘special edition’ of the PS5 lives up to its name by being decked out in enough gold to make Bappi Lahiri proud. In fact, the company claims that the console will be “assembled from 8 sheets, cast in solid gold. About 20 Kilograms of gold were used to create it.” So make sure your table is strong enough to take the extra weight.  Caviar further elaborates, “The case of this exclusive gadget is made in the original jewellery technique, which adds volume and texture to the model. The inspiration for the designers was the unique geometry of the gold ore and the graceful, beautiful outlines of ...

This maker built a working Batman grappling gun in only a year

Image
Built IRL If you’ve ever watched a Batman movie or played Just Cause , you’ve probably thought “wow, using a grappling hook would be so much fun.” YouTuber Built IRL, whose name is JT, thought so too — and he’s been working on making that happen for the past year. The end result is a grappling hook gun that functions pretty similarly to the ones we’ve seen in movies and games. As you’ll see in the video above, this new grappling gun is more impressive than many previous attempts. For one thing, it’s self-contained — the entire unit fits on his arm, including the CO2-powered blasting mechanism that shoots the hook using standard cartridges, and a very powerful 10,000W motor that’s properly fast and can completely pull him up into the air. (He shows... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/383gcuN

The LG Wing’s dual screens get a little easier to use in a new software update

Photo by Chaim Gartenberg / The Verge LG’s screen-swiveling Wing was one of the most interesting looking smartphones of 2020, but its unique design was held back by poor software support. A new software update , out today for the Verizon-exclusive device, looks to help address those issues by adding some new dual-screen functionality. Specifically, Droid Life reports that the new update makes it much easier to send apps to and from the smaller display to the main one (a process that previously involved some convoluted menu wrangling.) With the new update, there’s now a “send” button that shuttle apps from one display to the other, along with a “restart” button to relaunch apps that transition over poorly. Amazon buys Wondery, setting itself up to compete against Spotify for podcast domination

The companies announced the deal today, ending speculation about who might eventually buy the network, which is most well-known for true crime podcasts like Dirty John . (Apple and Sony were also reported to have at least discussed a possible purchase.) Amazon didn’t disclose the acquisition price, although earlier reports from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal suggested Wondery’s value was at least $300 million. A quirk of COVID-19 tests can track the new coronavirus variant

Image
A traveler at Los Angeles International Airport takes a COVID-19 test December 22nd. | Photo by Mario Tama / Getty Images Health officials in the United States may be able to use a fluke of COVID-19 testing to monitor the spread of a more contagious form of the virus, which was identified in the country for the first time this week. The variant is spreading widely across the United Kingdom, and has been found in over a dozen countries so far — including the US. Experts don’t think the coronavirus variant is more deadly than other forms of the virus, and the vaccines already developed should still protect against the new strain. But the variant does appear to spread more easily, and uncontrolled outbreaks would overwhelm hospitals more quickly. So far, one US case was detected in a patient with COVID-19 in Colorado . Health officials say that the patient... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2WXT7De

The LG Stylo 7 comes with a stylus that slots into the device just like the Note series. The famous leaker, Steve Hemmerstoffer aka OnLeaks shared some high-quality images of the device on voice.com. According to sources, there should be two variants of the LG Stylo 7, one with network capabilities upto 4G/LTE and the other supporting 5G networks. On the back of the phone, it clearly shows a triple rear camera setup with a vertical camera module, the camera bump is expected to be upto 10mm thick. New Samsung TVs with HDR10+ will adapt to ambient lighting

Image
It’s unclear if Samsung’s existing TVs will be updated to support the feature. | Image: Samsung HDR10+ Adaptive is a new feature coming to the high dynamic range standard that’ll optimize TV picture quality based on a room’s ambient brightness, Samsung announced today . HDR content is typically designed to look its best in dark rooms with as little ambient light as possible, but the new feature promises to use your TV’s light sensor to react to bright environments and adjust its picture quality accordingly. Samsung says the feature will launch globally with its “upcoming QLED TV products.” HDR10+ isn’t the first HDR standard to have introduced such a feature. At last year’s CES, Dolby announced Dolby Vision IQ, a new feature for its own HDR standard that similarly promises to optimize HDR content for the room it’s being watched in.... A modder has made a Nintendo 64 that’s smaller than the original’s controller

Image
Photo: GmanModz Taking an old console and making it as small as possible is a well-established tradition in the modding community, and there may be a new victor in the race to shrink the Nintendo 64 as far as possible ( via Input ). GmanModz has cut down an N64 to the point where it’s smaller than a GameCube controller — and only slightly bigger than the cartridges it takes. Photo: GmanModz The mod vs an N64 controller Yes, cartridges. This isn’t an emulator, this is an actual Nintendo 64 that was cut, soldered, and otherwise modded to fit into a handheld package, complete with screen, battery, and controls (the joysticks are from a Nintendo Switch, chosen for their diminutive size). At three and a half inches, the screen is... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/3nYvVAR
