The frighteningly simple technique that hijacked Jack Dorsey’s Twitter account

Image
Friday afternoon, Jack Dorsey’s 4.2 million Twitter followers got an unpleasant surprise. A group of vandals had gained access to the account , and used that access to blast out a stream of offensive messages and plugs for their group’s discord channel. Within 15 minutes, the account was back under control and the group was banned from Discord, but the incident was a reminder of the serious vulnerabilities in even the highest-profile accounts, and just how insecure phone-based authentication has become. The hackers got in through Twitter’s text-to-tweet service, operated by the acquired service Cloudhopper. Using Cloudhopper, Twitter users can post tweets by texting messages to a shortcode number, usually 40404. It’s a useful trick for S... 13 new trailers you should watch this week

Image
Photo: Disney Netflix announced this week that a number of its fall films will have exclusive theatrical runs before they start streaming. This isn’t the first time Netflix has debuted its films in theaters — a few hit theaters first last year, too — but this year’s theatrical slate is much larger and seems to indicate something of a shift in strategy. This year, Netflix is putting 10 movies in theaters ahead of time, up from just three last year (though a fourth was added later). It’ll range from a quiet relationships drama (Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story ) to an over-the-top comedy (the Eddie Murphy- led Dolemite Is My Name ) to prestige fare (Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman ). That’s a significant portion of Netflix’s fall film slate, and it includes... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2MNMyQK

Border agents are checking entrants’ Facebook and Twitter profiles — but we still don’t know how closely

Image
Photo by John Tlumacki/The Boston Globe via Getty Images Earlier this week, incoming Harvard freshman Ismail B. Ajjawi found himself blocked from entering the US. Ajjawi, a Palestinian resident of Lebanon, had landed in Boston before the start of classes. But The Harvard Crimson reported that after hours of questioning, US Customs and Border Protection agents revoked his visa. Ajjawi said a CBP agent searched his phone and laptop while asking questions about his friends’ social media activity. Then, she “started screaming at me,” Ajjawi said. “She said that she found people posting political points of view that oppose the US on my friend[s] list.” CBP hasn’t revealed what actually got Ajjawi’s visa revoked. “Specific information on individual travelers cannot be released due to the Privacy Act... Image

Here’s the changelog of the new update: New WP theme and rewards New outfits added Updated system settings Added customization guide Added emotes Improved UI & update pack size Improved graphics Battle parameters improved Increased accuracy of RPG-7 Added bombing zones The addition of emotes as well as new outfits should make the game more similar to the standard version of PUBG Mobile. It should also be noted that the game will now feature bombing zones, which should add a new layer of strategy to the game. It should be noted that PUBG Mobile Lite features a much smaller map. As such, it should make the red zone much more dangerous.  We also noted a new more additions that weren’t a part of the changelog. The main menu now features a pickup truck in the background. Currently, the game only offers a smaller ve

OnePlus TV is an Android TV with built-in Chromecast

The company also said that the TV will come with Google’s Play Store baked in, with the goal of elevating the smart TV experience in India. Apple iPhone trio details leak, may support reverse wireless charging and Apple Pencil

Image
With just ten more days to go before their official announcement, it would appear that the specifications for the iPhone trio have leaked in full. The three phones will be called the Apple iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This is in line with previous rumours that suggested that Apple would go with the Pro moniker for this year’s iPhones. The first phone in this year’s lineup is rumoured to be the iPhone 11, the direct successor to the iPhone XR. According to the leaked specs, it would come with a 6.1-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1792x828. The phone is expected to sport a glass design and come packing a 3110mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy A90 leak suggests 5G support

Image
Samsung has been rather ambitious abut its smartphone roadmap this year, having launched as many phones this year as months. After announcing the Samsung Galaxy A80, and bringing it to market a little later than expected, rumuors around the next phone in the A-series have started to pick up. It would appear that the next product in the A-series will be the Samsung Galaxy A90 and will support 5G. Twitter user @mmddj_ has tweeted official-looking slides that allegedly promote the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G. The image shows a white colour smartphone with a triple camera setup on the back aligned vertically to the left. This means that the rotating concept for the camera is not making a comeback no the A90 5G. The Samsung Galaxy A90 5G is rumoured to be a 6.7-inch smartphone with an AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution. The primary camera on the back is expected to be a 48MP shooter, accompanied by an 8MPO ultra-wide camera and a third 5MP sensor which is likely to be for collecting depth inf

Redmi Note 8, Note 8 Pro India launch could happen within eight weeks

Image
Redmi recently launched its Redmi Note 8 series of smartphones in China that consists of the Redmi Note 8 and ṭhe Redmi Noṭe 8 Pro. The new Redmi Note 8 Pro has also bagged the title of being the first smartphone with a 64MP camera, while the standard Note 8 sports a 48MP main sensor. The company’s India MD, Manu Kumar Jain, has now announced that the handsets will be introduced in India within a span of eight weeks. Jain says that the company requires the said amount of time to get its new device certified and tested in India for an official launch.  While we expected Xiaomi to soon launch the Redmi Note 8 series in India, it seems like Realme could best the company when it comes to launching new devices. The Realme 5 series of smartphones were recently launched in India and the company’s CEO, Madhav Sheth, said that Realme XT with a 64MP camera will launch by September end in India. If this comes to pass, chances are that Realme will beat Xiaomi in launching a 64MP camera smartphone

North’s Focals smart glasses now support Android’s notification actions

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge North has added native support for Android’s notification actions to its Focals smart glasses. Using the new functionality, you’ll now be able to access any shortcuts app developers include in their app’s notifications. 9to5Google , which first spotted the update, notes that these actions can include deleting or archiving emails in the Gmail app or retweeting tweets on Twitter. The feature should make it easier to rely more on your smart glasses without having to take your phone out of your pocket, similar to the functionality that was previously available with Google Glass. Unfortunately, the new feature is only available to Android users for the time being, so it’s unable to help with one of our biggest issues with the Focals , which is... Amazon’s sales platform may be too big to police

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge When a tech platform grows beyond a certain size, a now-familiar phenomenon begins to unfold. The creators no longer have a view of — or control over — all the day-to-day activity on the platform, allowing bad actors to manipulate it to their own ends. On Twitter, this led to unchecked harassment and abuse, much of it focused on women and minorities. On Facebook, it led to Cambridge Analytica and Russian interference in the 2016 election. On YouTube, it led to a surge in extremist content, boosted by algorithmic recommendations. Last week, thanks to a terrific investigation in the Wall Street Journal , we saw how size has blinded Amazon to a host of dangerous products that third-party sellers have made available. Google reveals major iPhone security flaws that let websites hack phones

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Security researchers working in Google’s Project Zero team say they have discovered a number of hacked websites which used previously undisclosed security flaws to indiscriminately attack any iPhone that visited them . Motherboard reports that the attack could be one of the largest ever conducted against iPhone users. If a user visited one of the malicious websites using a vulnerable device, then their personal files, messages, and real time location data could be compromised. After reporting their findings to Apple, the iPhone manufacturer patched the vulnerabilities earlier this year. Motherboard notes that the attack could have allowed the sites to install an implant with access to an iPhone’s keychain. This would have given the... Samsung Galaxy Fold reportedly re-launching on September 6, listed on companys India website as well

Image
The Samsung Galaxy Fold is the South Korean smartphone company’s first foldable smartphone and it could finally be launched globally on September 6, on the first day of IFA 2019. The launch date comes via Korean media but should be taken with a grain of salt since Samsung is yet to confirm it. Samsung was previously speculated to launch the handset by the end of September but if the new report is to be believed, the company might have dramatically advanced the scheduled launch. This report also comes at a time when the Samsung India online store has hosted a product webpage for the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which hints at the device’s imminent launch.  The Korean media report also states that the Samsung Galaxy Fold will hit shelves in the US and China in September. About 20,000 to 30,000 units of the handset are expected to be shipped in South Korea. As for the smartphone being listed on the company’s India website, the device’s features and specifications are listed but as expected, ther

If the devices aren’t removed from the streets, they could potentially be picked up by hurricane winds — transforming into threats to people and property. Miami has demanded that all of these mobility companies remove their products from the streets by noon on Friday, Bloomberg reported . Tampa has not yet issued a request for removal, but if (or when) it does, the companies will have 12 hours to comply with it. Apple was a little behind on Siri privacy, now it’s way ahead

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge It’s been a good 24 hours for defaults. Motion smoothing might stop being the default on TVs. Fitbit has a real shot at making the de-facto default smartwatch for Android users, who desperately need one. And the best default of all: the default opt-out on Siri recordings. Here’s our story on it: Apple apologizes for Siri audio recordings, announces privacy changes going forward . A key part of this story is that Apple straight-up apologized. That apology is totally warranted, and I’d like to briefly explain why. If you haven’t been following all the drama surrounding smart assistants saving your voice on their servers so humans could listen, I wrote a piece about it earlier this month . The main way Apple was (and is) better is it more... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2NDUxiJ

Google’s been thinking about a watch with a hole-punch camera

Image
Image: USPTO / Google A recently discovered patent suggests that Google was at one point experimenting with the idea of putting a camera slap bang in the middle of the face of a smartwatch. LetsGoDigital spotted the patent, which was filed back in July 2017, earlier this week. The patent is simply titled “Camera Watch,” and contains seven diagrams of the unreleased design. There was a time when cameras were a much more regular feature in smartwatches. Samsung, for example, included a camera on both the Galaxy Gear and Gear 2 in 2013 and 2014 respectively. However, in recent years they’ve become less common. Apple has never included a camera on an Apple Watch (although a patent suggests that it once considered putting one into the watch’s band ), and cameras... Pinterest’s work in public health shows the good a smaller social network can do

Image
Amelia Krales By 2018, it was clear that Pinterest suffered from a problem many of its peers had long dealt with. Because most people are vaccinated and do not spend their free time making pro-vaccine content for social networks, a search for “vaccines” on Pinterest returned anti-vaccination results 75 percent of the time . The consequences of vaccine-related misinformation taking over Pinterest and other, larger social networks is not theoretical: measles has had a scary resurgence around the world ,and the World Health Organization now lists vaccine hesitancy as a top-10 threat to global health. While the other big platforms dithered, Pinterest took decisive action: it stopped returning results for vaccine searches. “It’s better not to serve those... Huawei Mate 30 series to launch without Android OS, Google apps and services: Report

Image
Even though Huawei was recently granted a 90-day extension to conduct business with US firms, the smartphone maker seems like it's still headed towards trouble. A Google spokesperson has apparently told Reuters that Huawei won’t be able to use the company’s Android OS, services and popular apps like Google Maps on the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 series of handsets. Huawei is reportedly planning to launch its Mate 30 lineup on September 18 in Munich, Germany, and it will be the first major smartphone launch by the company since the US placed Huawei on the country’s entity list.  If the report is to be believed, it is still unclear what Huawei is planning to do. The company might use its home-grown Harmony OS, which can apparently be used on smartphones, wearables, TVs and more. However, this is purely speculation on our part right now and we will have to wait for some more information to be outed. As for the latest 90-day extension for Huawei by the US, it is said to not be applicable

Apple apologises over listening to Siri audio snippets, fires contractors who heard the recordings

Image
Apple is one company that takes pride in upholding the privacy of users in its ecosystem. However, last month, the company was called out for eavesdropping on users' conversations. It was reported that the Apple contractors were regularly listening to confidential Siri recordings, which included drug deals and recordings of couples making love. It was done as part of their job in providing quality control, or “grading”. Now, Apple has apologised for the privacy mishaps, and said it would no longer retain audio recordings of Siri interactions. "As a result of our review, we realise we haven't been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that we apologise," Apple said in a statement.  The “grading” was previously done on the basis of several factors including whether the activation of the voice assistant was deliberate or accidental. A report said that accidental activations were the main reason for the private conversations to be sent to Apple. However, the tech

Xiaomi announces another 64-megapixel phone because those are a thing now

Image
Redmi Note 8 Pro. Xiaomi has announced the latest entry in its phenomenally popular Redmi Note series and, just as the Redmi Note 7 heralded a flood of 48-megapixel phone cameras earlier this year, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is among the first with a 64-megapixel sensor. Realme semi-revealed its XT with the same sensor a couple of days ago, but Xiaomi has now made a full announcement, so feel free to debate among yourselves as to who was truly first. Why would you want a 64-megapixel camera? Well, as with 48-megapixel phones, it’s generally not so you can shoot at full resolution. Both sensor designs use 0.8μm pixels that are grouped together in fours for better light sensitivity that’s supposedly equivalent to 1.6μm pixels. Using that technique, a 48-megapixel... Facebook adds new requirements for political advertisers

Image
Facebook is adding new requirements for political advertisers, the company said on Wednesday, as part of its efforts to make the platform more secure in the run-up to the 2020 election. Before buying a political ad, advertisers will need to provide more information about their organization, including government-issued identification numbers. The move, which will take effect in mid-September, comes in response to some advertisers using misleading names in their disclaimers in order to disguise their identities. “In 2018 we did see that our disclaimer process was something that could be misused,” Sarah Schiff, a Facebook product manager, told The Verge . “This is an effort to strengthen that process.” Today’s changes mark an evolution in... YouTube may push users to more radical views over time, a new paper argues

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge YouTube’s difficult summer rolls on. Recent stories have revealed that the company might be accidentally generating video playlists for pedophiles ; the Federal Trade Commission is investigating the site’s targeting of ads toward children ; and the New York Times linked the site’s popularity to the rise of right-wing extremism in Brazil . (Also: everything linked at the top this column .) But nothing has defined YouTube’s summer more than the conflict between Vox.com video host Carlos Maza and right-wing pundit Steven Crowder . The conflict — over whether someone with millions of followers should be allowed to repeatedly call another YouTuber a “lispy queer” — highlighted the gap between what YouTube’s community guidelines say is allowed, and... Vivo Nex 3’s ‘waterfall’ display and camera shown off in hands-on video

Image
Video: Mrwhosetheboss / YouTube A day after Vivo posted a short teaser trailer on its Weibo account , the first hands on video of the upcoming Vivo Nex 3 has been published online. The video comes from British YouTuber Arun “Mrwhosetheboss” Maini, and although it’s light on specifics and features pre-production hardware and software, it gives us a pretty extensive look at the Nex 3’s “waterfall” curved display, camera, and 5G connectivity. The video suggests the early rumors of the phone having a screen-to-body ratio of “ over 100 percent ” might not be entirely accurate thanks to the presence of small top and bottom screen bezels, but it’s still impressive how far the screen screen extends round the sides of the device. Vivo has even switched the side power and volume... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/348BjHR

Microsoft announces an event on October 2, new Surface devices expected

Image
Microsoft has sent out press invites for their next event, which is scheduled for October 2 in New York City. Interestingly, Microsoft released the 2018 Surface devices on the same day last year. Hence, we are expecting to see the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7, and Surface Book 3 on October 2, 2019.  The tech giant is also rumoured to announce a dual-screen Surface device, codenamed Centaurus. The device has been reportedly in development for two years now. Other rumoured hardware announcements include Surface earbuds, and new keyboards with a dedicated Office button taking the place of the right-hand Windows key. We might also hear something about the next Windows 10 update at the event.  The new Surface devices are on the production line, and these updates are most likely to be minor refreshes to the current Surface product line.  Starting with the Surface Laptop 3, it could launch with a spec bump and include a USB-C port this time around. Rumour also has it that Microsoft may

Pixel 4 allegedly appears in photos leaked on Telegram

Image
An early render of the Pixel 4 was tweeted by Google back in June. | Image: Google Photos of what could be Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 have leaked via Telegram, XDA-Developers is reporting . The images appear to show a device that’s consistent with the official pics and information that’s been released about the phone by Google. They also suggest that the company is moving away from the two-tone color-schemes found on previous Pixels. It’s unclear what the source of the photos might be. XDA’s Mishaal Rahman said on Twitter that the images were shared in a “(very) small channel” on Telegram, and that they were also posted in a “private group” by someone who denied knowing the source of the images. XDA speculates that we’re looking at a prototype handset that’s being tested by Sprint on its network, due to the prominent... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/32eAyeR

Google removes CamScanner from Play Store after Trojan Dropper malware scare

Image
There’s a good chance that you know about the CamScanner app, which is available on both Android and iOS. The ‘Phone PDF Creator’ or ‘Scanner to Scan PDFs’ app had over 100 million downloads, before being booted from the Google Play Store. Researchers at Kaspersky Labs found a malware in the recent versions of the popular OCR (optical character recognition) app. It was apparently harbouring an advertising library containing a malicious module that the Kaspersky researchers identified as ‘Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Necro.n.’  As per the report, this particular malware module was previously spotted in a few apps that came preinstalled on some Chinese smartphones.  The malware module was spotted only on the Android version of the app and it seems like its iOS version is still available on the App Store, probably because of Apple’s strict app vetting policies. As the Kaspersky blog notes, CamScanner was a pretty good app that offered notable functionality. While it displayed ads for generat
