With dust storm on Mars finally clearing, Opportunity might talk to us again

Image
Mars rover Opportunity fell silent on June 10 owing to a dust storm that struck the 22-kilometre-wide Endeavour Crater called Perseverance Valley. The storm plunged the solar-powered rover into complete darkness. By June 20, the storm only grew worse. Finally, in late July, the storm began dying down, giving researchers back on Earth hope that communication with the stranded rover could once again be reestablished. Now, it seems the dust storm is clearing some more. If there ever was a right time to get Opportunity to talk to us again, it’s now. "The Sun is breaking through the haze over Perseverance Valley, and soon there will be enough sunlight present that Opportunity should be able to recharge its batteries," said John Callas, Opportunity Project Manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in a statement. Mission controllers on Earth are already trying to wake Opportunity up three times a week by sending commands to shout back through the big radio antennas of NASA’s Dee

Google, Harvard partner to use AI to predict earthquake aftershocks

Image
Google has announced that it is working with researchers at Harvard in using Artificial Intelligence to help predict earthquakes aftershock locations. Aftershocks occur after the initial ‘mainshock’ of an earthquake and while they aren’t as powerful as the main earthquake, they can significantly hamper recovery efforts.  Phoebe DeVries, Post-Doctoral Fellow at Harvard, notes that “although the timing and size of aftershocks has been understood, and explained by established empirical laws, forecasting the locations of these events has proven more challenging.” In order to make these predictions, DeVries says that the team of researchers used a database of information collected from 118 earthquakes from around the world. They then applied a neural net to analyse the relationships between the static stress changes that were caused by the mainshocks and the aftershocks. The algorithm was then able to identify patterns. These patterns were then used to create a model that will be able to o

Four Tinder plaintiffs drop out of lawsuit because Match might have quietly changed their contracts

Image
Four Tinder plaintiffs — Rosette Pambakian, Joshua Metz, Jonathan Badeen, and James Kim — are voluntarily withdrawing from their Match Group / IAC lawsuit today, claiming the company covertly tried to enact an arbitration agreement during their employment. All four plaintiffs worked at Tinder, which Match Group owns, up until they filed the lawsuit. At that point, Match / IAC placed them on administrative leave. They all seemingly signed the arbitration agreement. In a comment to The Verge , Pambakian said: “Just months after cheating Tinder employees out of billions of dollars, IAC / Match tried changing its policies in an attempt to force all current employees out of a public courtroom before a jury and into secret arbitration. Apple self-driving test car gets rear-ended by a Nissan Leaf in first ever crash

Image
One of Apple’s autonomous cars, which are currently driving around Sunnyvale, California and other nearby Silicon Valley cities, got into its very first crash one week ago, according to a report filed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles . Like many self-driving car crashes, this one was not the software’s fault. The Apple car, a modified Lexus RX450h SUV carrying special equipment and sensors, was traveling at just 1 mph while preparing to merge onto the Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale when a Nissan Leaf rear-ended it going around 15 mph. Apple’s Lexus and the Leaf sustained damage, but neither car’s passengers received any injuries, the report states. This isn’t indicative of Apple’s progress on self-driving cars in any... California passes strongest net neutrality law in the country

Image
California’s legislature has approved a bill being called the strongest net neutrality law in the US. The bill would ban internet providers from blocking and throttling legal content and prioritizing some sites and services over others. It would apply these restrictions to both home and mobile connections. That would essentially restore the net neutrality rules enacted federally under former President Barack Obama, which were later repealed by the Federal Communications Commission under the watch and guidance of current chairman Ajit Pai. But this bill actually goes further than those rules with an outright ban on zero-rating — the practice of offering free data, potentially to the advantage of some companies over others — of specific... Google won’t be releasing its own smartwatch this year

Image
Google has confirmed to Tom’s Guide that it has no plans to release its own smartwatch this year. Earlier rumors had pointed to a likely release of a so-called “Pixel Watch” and many were expecting it would be announced alongside the Pixel 3 , Pixel 3 XL , and whatever else Google has planned for an expected October 9th hardware event . If you are still holding out hope for some reason, Tom’s Guide didn’t leave much room for doubt in Google’s plans, confirming the news with the company after interviewing one of its executives: Miles Barr, Google’s director of engineering for Wear OS, said Friday during an interview that Google has no plans to release a smartwatch this year. “To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there... Apple launches repair program for defective iPhone 8 logic boards

Image
Apple quietly announced the launch of a free repair program for the iPhone 8 this afternoon, revealing that a “very small percentage” of units need replacement logic boards due to a manufacturing defect. The logic board is essentially the main printed circuit board of a computing device, containing the CPU, device memory, and other integral components. Apple says its faulty logic boards may have been causing random restarts, screen freezes, and defective startup initiations that prevent the iPhone 8 from turning on properly. The defect does not affect the iPhone X or the iPhone 8 Plus, and Apple says the affected units include only those sold between September 2017 and March 2018 in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New... How to pick the cloud storage service that’s right for you

Image
Storing your most sensitive files locally on a hard drive is still (and probably always will be) the logical thing to do. But it’s not always the most convenient, which is why most of us look to cloud storage as a secondary option. It has its own set of benefits: it’s reasonably affordable, it makes sharing files easier, it’s ubiquitous across most operating systems and devices, and it’s just really nice to have a backup when your hard drive dies. There are several services to pick from, and some of them are pretty similar. While common at their core offerings (to give you copious amounts of space to store files online), only a few go beyond that by giving users more free storage upfront, useful online productivity tools, and the option... Jabra’s excellent Elite 65t wireless earbuds are $40 off at Best Buy

Image
The Jabra Elite 65t are our favorite truly wireless earbuds , and you can get them for $40 off right now at Best Buy. Regularly priced at $170, both the copper black and titanium black color options are available for $129 . We found Jabra’s Elite 65t to be a good match for those who want more noise isolation than what the Apple AirPods provide. They rest deeper in the ear canal, and the swappable tips let you customize the fit. In terms of sound quality, you’ll get a more bass-heavy sound than Apple’s option. If getting fit is important to you, the more-expensive Jabra Elite Active 65ts feature a motion sensor that can track your workouts, though this option isn’t currently discounted. Jacksonville Madden shooting survivor sues EA and tournament venue

Image
A victim of the Jacksonville shooting last week that left three dead and 11 wounded has filed a negligent-security lawsuit that targets both EA, the makers of Madden , the game featured in the video game tournament where the shooting took place, and the locale that hosted the qualifier. According to Kotaku , Jacob Mitich was shot twice during the event, and now he’s seeking damages on the basis that EA and the venue “failed to provide a safe and secure environment.” After the shooting, Jacksonville fire marshals shut down the game bar and the pizzeria where it is located , citing a failure to submit building plans that included the game bar as well as three fire code violations. These include blocked exits, using strip plugs as permanent... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2orz3In

New Zealand town suggests banning cats to save native birds

Image
This week, the New Zealand town of Omaui suggested banning cats to save the native birds . Though cat-lovers are unhappy, the suggestion isn’t as ridiculous as it seems at first glance. First, there are no plans to kill existing pets. Specifically, Omaui councilmembers want owners to neuter, register, and microchip their animals. Fair enough. Then, they’ll be allowed to live out their natural life. But then when they die, that’s it. Residents won’t be allowed to get a new cat to replace the old one, but Garfield is safe so long as he lives. Second, there’s a good reason for this policy. Cats kill birds, and sometimes those birds are endangered. As John Collins, a member of the Omaui Landcare Charitable Trust who suggests the ban put it:... The Ford Focus is dead in the US because of Trump’s trade war

Image
Ford just announced that it’s abandoning plans to sell the Focus Active — which the company makes in China — in the United States because of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The car was supposed to be one of two models that Ford planned to sell in the US going forward as it shifts its lineup to be almost exclusively SUVs and trucks. Now, the only car Ford will sell in the US is the Mustang. The 25 percent tariff on cars that are assembled in China has made a “very difficult business case for [Ford], so we’re choosing to deploy these resources elsewhere,” Kumar Galhotra, Ford’s president of North America, said on a conference call on Friday morning . Ford is in the middle of a years-long restructuring that it expects will cost... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2NyYfHH

Apple releases new iOS 12 beta, putting a stop to infuriating update notification

Twitter rival Mastodon isn’t safe from online mobs either

Image
For social media users who are sick of Twitter, open-source platform Mastodon offers a familiar refuge. Its use of local communities, or “instances” that are connected through federation, allowed users to carve out smaller, and hopefully safer, spaces . When Twitter drove entire communities off its platform , Mastodon gave them a new online home. But a recent flare-up around actor Wil Wheaton has sparked concerns about how effective the platform truly is at acting against dog-piling and online mobs. Wheaton deactivated his Twitter account earlier this month, citing the company’s decision to keep Alex Jones on its platform . He moved over to Mastodon, one of the only platforms to present itself as a viable, direct rival to Twitter . However,... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2C3bRd6

aptX Adaptive codec is Qualcomms new step towards better Bluetooth audio

Image
As smartphone manufacturers are ditching the audio jack, the popluace is beign ushered towards a wireless era whther we like it or not. There’s no doubt that one will experience better audio quality with a wired medium, but there’s work to be done in order to get closer to the same level of quality using wireless means. Qualcomm has announced the new aptX Adaptive technology, which is aimed at reaching this goal. The new codec is an amalgamation of aptX HD, which is said to delivering HD sound quality, and aptX low latency that is meant for scenarios like better audio-video sync while watching a movie or gaming.  Qualcomm says that the new aptX Adaptive codec is dynamically adjustable and can switch between delivering the highest possible audio quality and low bitrate with low latency when needed. It also takes the external RF interference into account to provide “optimum audio quality or latency depending on the type of content being played on the device.” “aptX Adaptive is advancing

The best note-taking apps for class, work, and life

You might want a note-taking app as an artist, to take notes during a meeting to remember important feedback, or to jot down insights from a meaningful panel. Maybe you’re a celebrity who needs to publish a public apology to social media, and you need more space than a typical post affords. Often, we don’t give much thought to which app we’re using. It’s either the first app that’s available or the one everyone says is good. Still, there’s a small quality-of-life improvement to enjoy when you switch from a mediocre, passable note-taking app to the best one you can find. And wouldn’t it be nice to have one app that fulfills your note-taking needs so that all your notes are in one place? That’s why we looked for the simplest,... Huawei promises its Kirin 980 processor will destroy the Snapdragon 845

Image
At IFA today, Huawei announced its newest system-on-a-chip, the Kirin 980, which boasts a number of world firsts. It’s the first 7nm mobile processor, the first one built around ARM’s Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU, the first with a Cat.21 smartphone modem supporting speeds up to 1.4Gbps, and the first chip to support 2,133MHz LPDDR4X RAM. The Kirin 980 has 6.9 billion transistors, but I’ve seen it for myself and it’s no larger than a thumbnail. The road to today’s announcement started three years ago for Huawei, with the company engaging more than 1,000 senior semiconductor design experts and churning through more than 5,000 engineering prototypes. Huawei’s AI Cube is a 4G router and Alexa speaker, not a cube

The Huawei AI Cube is not a cube. I just really want us to get that fact agreed upon before we proceed any further. It is, however, a rather unique device, combining a 4G modem, a home Wi-Fi router, a high-end 360-degree wireless speaker, and a Huawei-Amazon collaboration that promises Alexa integration and some not-yet-articulated AI capabilities. Shaped like an elongated Google Home with a flat top, the Huawei AI Cube is an effort to get Huawei in on the flourishing smart speaker business. Android OS to clock nearly 85 market share in 2018, claims IDC

Image
Android OS is expected to capture nearly 85 percent market share in the operating system space by the end of 2018. The volumes of the smartphones with Android OS are expected to grow at a five-year Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.4 percent, with shipments approaching 1.41 billion in 2022, market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) said in its latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Also, the average selling prices (ASPs) of the Android shipments are growing at a double-digit pace and are expected to grow 11.4 percent in 2018 to $262, up from $235 in 2017. For iOS, the firm said that iPhone volumes are expected to grow by 2.1 percent in 2018 to 220.4 million in total. IDC forecasts iPhones to grow at a five-year CAGR of 2.0 percent, reaching volumes of 238.5 million by 2022. When it comes to the worldwide smartphone market, IDC says that it is expected to decline again in 2018 and will experience low single-digit growth from 2019 through the end of its f

Mozilla Firefox will soon block all ad-traffic by implementing a will not track policy

Image
Tracking user behaviour online has become a dominant source of revenue for many companies. By tracking what users do online, companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon are able to sell their services to advertisers in the form of targeted advertising. As users started to block cookies which were the original tracking method, companies developed newer, more persistent ways of tracking people through the browser, using technologies like invisible pixels and what not. Today, Mozilla is taking a stance against such practices, changing their policy in favour of the consumer, switching from passive a “do not track” policy to “will not track.” “In the near future, Firefox will, by default, protect users by blocking tracking while also offering a clear set of controls to give our users more choice over what information they share with sites,” said Mozilla VP of product strategy Nick Nguyen. The changes will roll out on a trial basis later in September with Firefox 63 which will block slow-loa

Beyerdynamic’s new wireless headphones put the LED lights where they belong: on the inside

Image
The Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC headphones come with a neat lighting trick: instead of having exterior LEDs spoiling their aesthetic, they have internal lights to inform the user of their status. It’s such a simple switch in thinking, executed with a smidgen of flair, yet its effect is profound. When you think about it, the only time you want to see a status light on your headphones is when they’re off your head, and you probably want to see that light without ambiguity. So Beyerdynamic has done what’s obvious in hindsight by illuminating the inner periphery of the cups with informative colors. When you first pick up a Lagoon pair that’s already on, the left ear cup will glow blue and the right one will glow red — because that’s when you’ll...
