Facebook app to get redesigned navigation bar with personalised shortcuts

Image
Facebook is making some changes to its app’s navigation bar on Android and iOS. The navigation bar on Facebook will soon be populated by the most used services, personalised for each Facebook user. The news comes from CNET, which reports that Facebook is looking to bring users closer to their favourite services on the platform by redesigning the navigation bar which rests on top in the Android app and the bottom in the iOS app. As of now, Facebook users can see four icons on the app in India - Newsfeed, Friend Requests, Notifications, and the Hamburger menu to access shortcuts, apps and other linked profiles. With the redesign, Facebook will probably show users anywhere between 4 - 6 icons in the navigation bar. At first, Facebook will automatically choose a user’s most used services and place them on the navigation bar, but going forward, the company plans to give users control over what they see by providing an option in the settings to change these icons. "We want the shortcut...

OnePlus tops Samsung and Apple in Indian premium smartphone segment for Q2 2018, Samsung leads globally

Image
For the first time ever, OnePlus has leapfrogged Samsung and Apple to gain the top spot in the Indian premium smartphone segment in the second quarter of 2018, market research firm Counterpoint Research has said. The Chinese smartphone brand captured 40 percent of the market driven by record shipments of its OnePlus 6 as compared to its previous flagships. OnePlus was also the fastest growing brand in the premium segment registering a 446 percent growth, while shipments for Apple and Samsung declined year-on-year (YoY). Samsung captured 34 percent share in the premium segment and its shipments declined a massive 25 percent YoY due to a downward spiral in shipments of Galaxy S9 as compared to Galaxy S8. Apple’s share in the premium segment reached its lowest ever at 14 percent due to decline in shipments for its iPhone 8 and iPhone X devices. Counterpoint predicts that since OnePlus has now launched its offline and exclusive stores across key cities in the country, the brand will b...

Additionally, the photos and notifications will also be mirrored to Windows 10 and one can simply drag and drop to copy images. Microsoft’s blog reads, “And rolling out in the coming weeks, Android users might also start to notice a...

How Bird plans to spread its electric scooters all over the world

Image
Bird is making its first major move outside the US. The scooter-sharing startup announced today that its rideables would be hitting the streets of Paris and Tel Aviv for a pair of pilots that the Santa Monica, California-based company says will be its first foray into foreign markets. Bird is also eyeing other cities as it seeks to capitalize on the buzz surrounding the new business of electric-powered, two-wheeled mobility. The pilots in both cities will be limited at first, Bird says, starting with 50–100 scooters and then scaling up from there. On Wednesday, Bird’s e-scooters will be available in Paris in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd arrondissements of the City of Lights. In the coming weeks, a pilot program will begin in Tel Aviv in... Huawei Mate 20 Pro to feature in-display fingerprint sensor, Kirin 980: Leak

Image
After launching the P20 Pro, Huawei, it seems, is readying for the launch of their next flagship, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. According to an exclusive published by XDA Developers, they’ve managed to get hold of firmware files for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Lite. After having examined the firmware files, we get a first glimpse of the hardware specifications of these three upcoming smartphones, the most notable being the Kirin 980 chipset. Huawei has continued to use the Kirin 970 chipsets for its smartphones till this year, prompting many to wonder why the company was not pushing out the Kirin 980 sooner. The reason for that is that the Kirin 980 SoC will be the first to be manufactured on the 7nm process, a technique that has required significant R&D on the part of all major chip manufacturers. The Kirin 980 is expected to be unveiled at IFA 2018, and will be first available in the Mate 20 as per the firmware files examined by XDA. The new 7nm FinFET proc...

Google publishes guidelines for developers to enhance app experience on notch displays with Android P

Image
From displays with thick bezels, smartphones have now moved towards edgeless designs, and manufacturers are constantly vying for more screen real estate by coming up with alternative solutions to house components like the front camera, sensors , earpiece and more. The notch made it into our lives with the Essential Phone and then Apple’s iPhone X made us come to terms with it. The more affordable flagship makers followed suite by launching phones like the Asus Zenfone 5z, Huawei P20 Pro, OnePlus 6 and the likes. Oppo’s Find X and Vivo’s Nex took the edgeless display concept a little further and included motorised cameras that pop out of the display, without cutting into it like a notch. Google, too, jumped onboard when it announced support for the notch and gesture based navigation with the upcoming Android P OS. So if Android P is fully embracing the notch, it is but natural to think that Google’s next flagship smartphone series will sport the display element. The Pixel 3 XL, bigger ...

Huawei shipped more smartphones than Apple in the second quarter

Image
Huawei overtook Apple and moved up into second place in market share of worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2018, according to data from IDC, Canalys, and Strategy Analytics. The company shipped over 54 million handsets in the second quarter compared to the 41.3 million iPhones that Apple sold and Samsung’s 73 million units. “The arrival of Huawei in the second position marks the first quarter since 2Q10 where Apple has not been the number one or two smartphone company in terms of market share,” IDC said in its press release . According to IDC’s figures, Q2 market share breaks down as follows: Samsung had 20.9 percent, Huawei had 15.8 (a new record for the company), and Apple had 12.1 percent share. Xiaomi and Oppo rounded out the list.... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2LIdGjK

Facebook shuts off access to user data for hundreds of thousands of apps

Image
Facebook this evening announced that it’s shutting off access to its application programming interface, the developer platform that lets app makers access user data, for hundreds of thousands of inactive apps. The company had set an August 1st deadline back in May, during its F8 developer conference , for developers and businesses to re-submit apps to an internal review, a process that involves signing new contracts around user data collection and verifying one’s authenticity. The goal is to ensure third-party software on Facebook was in line with the company’s data privacy rules and new restrictions put in place in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal , in which a third-party developer siphoned user data and sold it to another... Spotify is now streaming Archie motion comics

Image
Spotify has partnered up with Nerdist to offer motion comics based on new Archie comics. All six issues/episodes feature music and voice acting alongside the original comic illustrations. If you watch Riverdale on CW or Netflix, you’ll be familiar with the characters and their backstories, but the storyline follows the comics and diverges from the television show. The motion comics are available in Spotify’s mobile app. To watch, tap play and the episode will begin. You’ll be reading, hearing, and experiencing the comic all at once. The text of the comics still appear, but since the comic auto-plays rather quickly between panels, you don’t really get the option to read at your own pace. The graphics also appear a bit small compared to W... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2ApT0YU

Tesla whistleblower countersues over Elon Musk’s ‘defamatory’ statements

Image
The former Tesla employee who was sued for allegedly hacking and leaking trade secrets has filed a counterclaim against the company over potentially defamatory comments made by CEO Elon Musk. Martin Tripp, who worked at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada until June, says in the new filing that a number of comments Musk made about him in the past few weeks — some from a company-wide email, others in various statements to the press, and some from a handful of the CEO’s tweets — are false, caused emotional distress, and have even led to “numerous threats to his personal safety.” Tripp also claims in the countersuit that he has been forced to relocate, has experienced health problems like anxiety and nausea, and has trouble sleeping as a result... Apple Pay is coming to CVS and 7-Eleven later this year

Image
Apple Pay will be supported in CVS pharmacies and 7-Eleven stores nationwide, CEO Tim Cook announced on a call with investors this afternoon following the company’s positive third quarter earnings results . In addition to adding CVS and 7-Eleven as retail partners, Cook says Apple Pay handled more total transactions last quarter — more than 1 billion — than competitor Square and more mobile transactions than PayPal. The platform will also be launching in Germany later this year, Cook added. Apple Pay has had a steady rollout since its launch in October 2014, and it now supports most major credit cards and US banks. It’s also available in more than two dozen countries and regions and supports around 4,900 banks globally. Despite... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2NZcFk3

Microsoft starts testing Your Phone Windows 10 app that mirrors phone content to a PC

Image
Microsoft is starting to test its new Your Phone app for Windows 10. The software maker first unveiled the app back at the company’s Build developer conference in May, and it’s designed to mirror content from a phone to a PC. Android phone users will be able to test Your Phone first, with the ability to drag and drop recent photos straight into Office apps and other Windows apps direct from a phone. Microsoft is also planning to add support for text message sync and notifications from phones to mirror to a PC. The Your Phone app requires an Android app to be installed to mirror phone content to a PC, and Microsoft is also planning to extend this same feature to iPhone users . Microsoft claimed photos and notifications will be mirrored... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2LD7XMh

Apple races to become the first trillion-dollar company after strong Q3 earnings

Image
Apple posted its third quarter earnings today with a revenue of $53.3 billion, surpassing its revenue projection by $1 million. It’s the strongest third quarter for the company ever, despite that it’s a quarter that tends to slow on iPhone sales as consumers prepare for new smartphone announcements in the fall. The average selling price of the iPhone was $724, which was above analyst estimates of $693. Apple’s expected revenue for fiscal Q4 is $60 to $62 billion, a 23 percent growth from this period last year. The strong forecast could suggest that multiple new hardware devices are coming in the fall; so far, rumors suggest that up to three new iPhone models could be announced, while consumers are also anticipating a new version of the... Google search will now highlight useful data journalism from news stories

Image
Google is working with publishers to make it easier to view data journalism in search results, as announced on its blog today . It’s one of the steps Google News Initiative is taking to make data journalism more visible, with the field quickly growing across media. Over half of all newsrooms now have dedicated data journalists, and this feature aims to pinpoint the most useful results from pages containing data tables. “Data journalism takes many forms, and it’s not always clear from the headline that there is potentially useful data within that document or story,” Google News Lab’s Simon Rogers wrote in today’s blog post. “It isn’t always easy for Google Search to detect and understand tables of data to surface the most relevant... Annual Annenberg study shows Hollywood diversity stats haven’t actually improved in a decade

Image
Issues surrounding inclusivity and diversity make headlines often these days, but the attention isn’t exactly translating to real action. According to this year’s edition of USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s annual study , Hollywood’s progress on representation has been more or less stagnant for a full decade across practically all marginalized groups. “As the reverberations of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements continue to resonate in the entertainment industry and beyond, this investigation marks how far we still have to go,” the report concludes. This year, the study examined 1,100 films and 48,757 characters between 2007–2017, with an eye toward independent speaking or named characters shown on-screen for gender, race /... The struggles of MoviePass, the film subscription service

Image
When MoviePass was first founded in 2011, it had a relatively simple business model: a subscription service for theatrically released movies, where members would pay a monthly fee in exchange for a kind of all-you-can-eat buffet of movies. The idea was to bring theaters on board with a profit-sharing system that would benefit both the theaters and the service. But theater chains were immediately resistant, and MoviePass’ experiments with various pricing tiers — some as much as $50 a month — only drew small numbers of subscribers. But shortly after analytics firm Helios and Matheson acquired a majority stake in the company in August 2017, MoviePass dropped its monthly rate below $10 for a subscription that offered users one movie ticket... Waymo’s self-driving taxis will reportedly cost as much as Uber or Lyft

Image
Waymo, the self-driving unit of Google parent Alphabet, has been mum about the fare prices of its soon-to-be-launched commercial ride-hailing service in Phoenix, Arizona. But according to Bloomberg , riders can expect prices to be about the same as the cost of taking an Uber. In interviewing members of Waymo’s “Early Rider” program, reporters from Bloomberg got to see a mock-up of the company’s still-underwraps ride-hailing app, complete with probable fare prices. And, unsurprisingly, the fares appear to be aligned with preexisting services like Uber and Lyft. According to Bloomberg : All rides are free for volunteers, but the Waymo app recently started to show hypothetical prices. A view of the app by Bloomberg News offers the first... Twelve South’s new AirPods holder clips onto your backpack so you never lose track of the earbuds

A company called Twelve South knows the plight of the messy bag owner. Today, it launched a new product called AirSnap , which is a small, leather holder for your AirPods case. It’s available in black, teal, or brown for $29.99 through Amazon or the Twelve South website. The company says each one will “develop a unique patina over time, making each one personal.” Expect to see some wear over time. It must be a bummer to lose your AirPods in your bag. Please don’t try vaginal rejuvenation devices, warns FDA

Image
The US Food and Drug Administration has declared that it is cracking down on “vaginal rejuvenation” devices that use lasers to reshape the vagina. Though these have been approved for specific purposes, like treating cancer or removing genital warts, they are increasingly being used for purposes like dryness and menopause-related issues. There is no evidence that they work. The FDA has already sent warning letters to seven companies hawking the treatment for unapproved purposes. In one instance, the company Cynosure claims that its vaginal treatments stimulate a “healing response” with “virtually no side effects.” The FDA begs to differ, claiming that these treatments can cause burns, scarring, and chronic pain. Vagina rejuvenation isn’t... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2voVYXx

Topher Grace is the latest Hobbit fan to recut the bloated Peter Jackson movies

Image
Fans have been trying to recut Peter Jackson’s overstuffed trilogy of The Hobbit films for about as long as the third movie in the series (based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s roughly 300-page novel) has been out on Blu-ray. The latest edit comes from an unlikely place — actor Topher Grace, who IndieWire reports has edited down Jackson’s trilogy into a single two-hour film. Grace isn’t exactly a stranger to fan edits of films — in 2012, he famously trimmed down George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels into a now-legendary 85-minute film. But the Hobbit edit was born out of slightly different motivations: Grace says he needed to relax after the strain of playing David Duke in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Grace doesn’t typically find himself in an editor’s... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2vqmQqc

MoviePass’ latest survival plan: increase prices, gut first-run movie access

Image
July has not been good for MoviePass, the embattled all-you-can-watch movie ticket subscription service. The company ran out of money and shut down for a night last week . It’s compensated by shutting people out of popular movies like Mission: Impossible — Fallout . The company has claimed lately that technical difficulties are keeping users from getting movie tickets, though it’s unclear whether this is also a behind-the-scenes gambit to limit how much of its remaining money users can spend. The MoviePass stock has plummeted . And now, MoviePass has announced a slew of changes that aim to “compress its timeline to reach profitability” — by making the service much more restrictive. Sony has released a fresh trailer for its upcoming Venom movie, a cautionary tale about what happens when you fail to treat your parasites. Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the anti-hero to Riz Ahmed’s Dr. Carlton Drake, a sort of mad genius-slash-corporate villain trying to cheat nature and achieve self-guided human evolution via biological upgrades rather than technological ones. The Chuwi HiGame PC is a cheaper, noisier mini gaming rig

Image
Earlier this year, Intel released its eighth-generation NUC , an incredibly compact PC that still managed to pack enough power to run AAA and VR gaming titles at playable frame rates. But the downside to the NUC is largely its cost — for the price of the NUC, which could run more than $1,500 with the necessary RAM and storage you’d need, you can get a much more powerful traditional gaming PC. Chuwi’s HiGame PC is a new compact PC that aims to pick up where Intel’s leaves off. It runs the same platform as the NUC, but Chuwi is selling the HiGame as a complete PC (as opposed to the barebones way Intel offers the NUC) for hundreds of dollars less. Lyft will pay you $550 to ditch your car for a month

Lyft is raising the stakes in its mission to dominate all modes of transportation in major cities. Starting in August, the ride-hailing company will offer 100 residents of Chicago $550 each in credit to Lyft and several other mobility services if they ditch their personal vehicles for a month. It’s a bold, if slightly gimmicky, way to highlight the high costs associated with car ownership, while also promoting cheaper alternatives of getting around. To be sure, Lyft isn’t handing over $550 checks to people and then sending them on their way. The money will come with strings attached. 20th Century Fox researchers create AI model to predict audience for a movie

Image
In a first, researchers from 20th Century Fox film studios have developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered model to predict what target audience will most likely see a movie. The prediction is done on the basis of the film’s trailer. Since video trailers are one of the most critical elements of marketing campaigns for new films, the model can provide an opportunity to filmmakers to make movies depending on the interests of general moviegoer population, easily communicate the plot of the movie to them, present the main characters, and reveal important hints about the story. This could also help them to understand what aspects of the movie the audience liked and what parts they did not. “These insights typically determine the strategy for the rest of the marketing campaign. In this paper we present a tool, which we call Merlin Video, that uses computer vision to create dense representations of the movie trailer, and uses those representations to predict customer behaviou...

First radioactive molecule detected in space after three decades of a celestial event

Image
For the first time ever, scientists have observed a radioactive molecule in space that originates from an ancient stellar explosion. As per Space.com, via a study published in the journal Nature Astronomy, the detected 26AlF radioactive molecule was radiated when a red nova occurred in the 17th century, which was observed by astronomers as a brightly shining phenomenon in the Vulpecula constellation. Red Nova is similar to a supernova, but instead of one, two stars are involved and they merge in an explosive event, which is followed by a cool off. While cooling-off, they produce large amounts of molecular gas and dust.  The molecular gas, 26AlF is a radioactive isotope of aluminum in the leftovers of the Nova which is called CK Vul (or Nova Vul 1670). Even though space is filled with various kinds of radiations, it’s the first time a radioactive molecule has been detected there. Additionally, this is also the first time that an entity producing the radioactive 26AlF isotope has di...

No, these numbers have not been derived by a scientific research or a lengthy study, these are numbers compiled by popular movie review and discovery website Rotten Tomatoes.   According to data gathered by the website, movies in which Tom Cruise runs more than 1,000 feet have a higher Tomatometer average - 71 percent - than the movies in which he runs lesser. “Tom Cruise has sprinted a little over 24,000 feet on screen throughout his 37 years in the movies,” noted Rotten Tomatoes. How, pray tell, did Rotten Tomatoes get to this conclusion? Well, it wasn’t as fast a process as Cruise bolting in the new Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The whole scene was published by Mashable in a video. In a 2.24 minute clip, the divers are seen jumping off the plane from about 15,000 feet. They claim that this was the first time they jumped off a plane with smartphones strapped to their bodies. The goal of the dive was to see if the technology could work...
